Wabash County High School Basketball on Wabash WebTV

by Bill Barrows

I've spent more time watching the weather since New Year's Day than I do during a typical summer in anticipation of scheduling games and tournaments at the Field of Dreams. Apparently, that isn't going to change anytime soon. As I write this article, there is another storm brewing somewhere off the west coast that will be nicknamed Winter Storm Nika that could ruin the following schedule, but just in case it doesn't happen, here is the schedule for this week.

Wabash County high school basketball on Wabash WebTV

By Bill Barrows

To say that the artic deep freeze that we have experienced over the past couple of weeks has caused chaos with the high school basketball schedule, let alone the school schedule, is a huge understatement. So, I guess I will continue my stories to the kids about walking to school as a child through two feel of snow uphill both ways until spring. Oh, and here is the updated schedule for basketball games this week.

We begin with games on Tuesday, unless Mother Nature says otherwise. The Lady Knights of Southwood travel to Southern Wells for a non-conference game. The Lady Squires of North Manchester travel up to Triton and the Wabash boys will play at the Lakeland Christian Academy. On Wednesday, there will be a TRC game that is  a re-schedule from December, pitting the Lady Apaches of Wabash against Rochester at home. Wabash WebTV will be there to bring you all the action from Wabash on Wednesday, Jan. 29 starting at approximately 7:15 p.m.

Lady Norse roll at Madison Grant

by Gary Andrews

Wednesday night at home against Bluffton the Northfield Lady Norse basketball team got off to a hot start and led 24-6 after one, only to take their foot off the pedal in a 51-24 win. Thursday at Madison Grant that didn't happen, as the Norse led 19-2 after one and 38-5 at the half in route to a 64-18 win over the Argylls.

Getting a couple games in after their 20-day lay off, the Norse found their shooting, making 27 of 57 field goal attempts for 47 percent.

The Norse defense forced 27 turnovers while committing just 5.

Lady Apaches escape

by Gary Andrews

With Kyleigh Hampton out with illness and Abby Stein out with an injury the Wabash Lady Apache basketball team needed someone to step up Wednesday against Lewis Cass. Leading scorer Claire Cromer did just that with a 28 point performance with several other players making key shots down the stretch as Wabash used a fourth quarter comeback to top Cass 56-49.

Claire Cromer and Sarah Pucket both hit buckets in the first minute but the Lady Apaches trailed 6-4 because of two, three pointers from Savanna Thompson of Cass. Pucket would again hit to knot the score at 6, but the Lady Kings were finding the bucket and led 10-7 when Puckett and Cromer hit two free throws each to put the Apaches up 11-10. Back came the Kings with four straight to go up 14-11 when Cromer hit before the buzzer to make it 14-13.

Lady Apaches get TRC win at Manchester

by Gary Andrews

The Wabash and Manchester girls’ basketball teams were battling for the second time this season Saturday, as the lady Apaches paid Manchester a visit in a TRC match up. Wabash had defeated Manchester in the county tourney in December 52-27 and backed that up with a 63-31 win Saturday.

The game started in a helter smelter fashion with the first four possessions ending with a turnover. Kyleigh Hampton would break the ice with a three pointer to give Wabash a 3-0 lead and Wabash built the lead to 5-0 with two Claire Cromer free throws. Cierra Carter would stop the Apache run with a bucket to make it 5-2 and the Lady Squires hung close, trailing just 9-6 when Cromer hit a free throw and Lyndsie Thomas a bucket to stretch the lead to 12-6. Kiana Gillum and Lyndsie Thomas would trade buckets to end the quarter as Wabash led 14-8.

Phillipy erupts in Knights win over Whitko

by Gary Andrews

With the injury to Jackson Blair keeping him on the sideline, Southwood leading scorer Corey Phillipy knew he needed to step up Friday against Whitko. Stepping up would be an under statement as Phillipy erupted for 34 points in the Knights 68-47 win over the Wildcats.

Whitko would stay with Southwood the first quarter as the Knights led just 16-14 after the first stop before Corey Phillipy and the tandem of Ross Phillipy and Alex Harmon started to dominate. Southwood would out score Whitko 14-7 in the second to take a 30-21 lead to the locker room.
