The Southwood baseball team took a double header from Eastbrook Saturday, winning game one 10-7 and game two 6-3.

In game one, the Knights trailed 5-4 heading to the sixth when they exploded for 5 runs, then picked up an insurance run in the seventh for the 10-7 win.

Jackson Blair led the Knights, going 2 for 3 with a home run and 3 rbi's. Clay Hinrichsen was 2 for 4. Brandin Frazier had a home run.

In game two, Southwood led 4-3 heading to the sixth when they scored twice and held on for the 6-3 win.

Robbie Cole and Christian Deeter had 2 hits and 2 rbi's each.

The Manchester softball went on the road Saturday to battle league leading Rochester in a TRC match up. For five innings the Lady Squires played the Zebras to a 1-1 tie before giving up 6 runs in the sixth in a 7-1 loss.

Brooklyn Howard started the game with a single but was thrown out at second attempting to steal. The Squires did not see a base runner again until the fourth. Trailing 1-0 Howard would again start the inning with a single and was brought home on a Celina Carter single to tie the score.

Sydney Jordan had a single in the fifth.

In the bottom of the sixth Rochester would plate 6 runs. The Zebras squeezed home two runs while also getting two singles and a triple.

The TRC track meet was held Thursday at Tippecanoe valley. The Southwood girls had the top team finish of the night, placing second. Northfield was third, Manchester fifth and Wabash sixth. Northfield freshman Jacklyn Peas was the top point winner of the night, winning the 100 and 300 hurdles plus the 200-meter dash. Peas was fourth in the long jump.

Other winners from the county were Ellie White of Southwood in the 400 meter dash, Rae Bedke in the 800 meter, Jenna Halderman of Northfield in the 1600 meter, the 4x400 relay team of Ellie White, Jaycie Wright, Emily Lehner and Lexi Brickner from Southwood, the 4x800 relay team of Ellie White, Taylor Heath, Amy Bowman and Emily Lehner from Southwood, Katie McCauley of Wabash in the shot put, Hannah Olk of Manchester in the discus.

The Southwood girls and Wabash boys won county track titles at Manchester Thursday night. The highlight of the evening was Northfield’s Jenna Halderman, who broke the county records in the 800 and 1600 runs. Halderman ran the 1600 in 5:19.73, while breaking the 800 with a time of 2:23.29. There were numerous great performances with several county records being just missed.

Southwood won the girls meet with 138 points. Northfield was second with 128, Manchester was third with 111 and was Wabash fourth with 79.

The girls’ basketball camp for students in grades 1-8 is set for June 9-13. First through fifth grade will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. and Sixth through eighth grade will meet from 2:30-4 p.m.

The camp will be under the direction of Head Coach Jacob Everett with assistance from the MJSHS girl’s basketball staff and the high school players. All campers will receive a T-shirt, camp ball and treats.

The boys’ basketball camp for students in grades K-8 is set for June 16-20. Kindergarten through second grade will meet from 12:30-1:30 p.m., with grades 3-5 meeting from 1:30-3 p.m., and grades 6-8 meeting from 3-4:30 p.m.

The camp will be under the direction of Eric Thompson with assistance from the MJSHS boys’ basketball staff and the high school players.

The Northfield golf team placed third Saturday at the Jeremy Cole Invite. Oak Hill won the invite with a 321, with Maconaquah took second with 325 and the Norse third with 326. Manchester was 9th and Southwood 10th.

“Honeywell Golf Course was in great shape today and the weather was near perfect. There were some really good teams playing here today, and their scores and individual scores reflected it,” said Coach Terrell.

“I think the guys played very well today. They all had a couple holes that they didn’t score well on, but they fought through it. We had two guys medal today (top 8) Braydon and Austin, and Andrew just missed it by a stroke. We have been working on our short game, and I believe it is paying off,” added Coach Terrell.

The Wabash varsity baseball team won the Apache Invite Saturday, defeating Tri-Central in game one 6-1 and Leo in the championship 4-3.

In game one, the Apaches collected 8 hits, scoring 1 run in the first, 1 in the second and 3 in the fourth to lead 5-1 before tacking on an insurance run in the 6th.

In the championship game against Leo, the Apaches spent a major portion of the first three innings getting out of trouble and finding a hit. In the top of the first, Leo loaded the bases with one out before pitcher Roger Davis forced two fly outs to get out of the inning.

In the second, Leo had a runners on first and second after an Apache error and a bunt single. On a grounder to second, the Apaches got the force with the Leo runner from second trying to score on the play. Shortstop Treavor Floor rifled a strike to catcher Kodi Fuller for the tag and the Apaches escaped again.

In the third, Leo had two runners on with one out when shortstop Treavor Floor fielded a grounder, stepped and second and threw to first for a double play to get out of the inning.

Wabash senior Grant Sailors signed his letter of intent Wednesday to play baseball at Saint Francis. Currently, Sailors has a .417 batting average through 9 games with 15 hits, two homeruns and 11 RBIs. On the mound, Sailors is 1-2 with a 3.12 ERA. In 22.1 innings, Sailors has struck out 21 and walked 8 batters.

Sailors will study Nursing at Saint Francis and looks forward to playing against his brother Zach, who is playing at Indiana Tech. Saint Francis is coached by Dustin Butcher, who expects immediate playing time for Sailors. “Grant will be on the mound for us and when he’s not, he will play first or DH. We want to keep him off the left side of the diamond to keep his arm strong,” Butcher said.
