Wabash girls capture basketball regional crown

After winning their seventh straight sectional title the Wabash Lady Apaches made the trip to Lapel on Saturday for the second straight year in search of that elusive regional crown.

It was no easy task as Wabash took on No.9 Shenandoah in game one, holding off a late Raider charge for a 50-47 win and another shot at a regional title. No. 10 Fountain Central defeated Sheridan on a buzzer beater in game two, setting up the championship game. The Lady Apaches trailed most of the game before wearing down the taller Mustangs in the fourth for an exciting 60-52 win to earn the schools first ever girls regional crown.

Southwood’s Houlihan signs with IUK

Southwood senior Abby Houlihan became the first recruit for the new golf program at Indiana University Kokomo. Houlihan signed her letter of intent Wednesday, Feb. 11, at Southwood.

While holding or being a part of 15  golf school records while at Southwood, Houlihan will be looked upon by the Cougars as a leader with the opportunity at playing number one right away.

Manchester boys fall to Columbia City

The Manchester boys’ basketball team fell to Columbia City, 53-39, on Friday.

Columbia City jumped on the Squires in the first quarter to grab a 13-7 lead before doubling up on the Squires in the second 14-7 to lead 27-14 at the half.

Boys’ sectional pairings announced

The field has been set for the boys basketball sectional at Oak Hill beginning on Tuesday, March 3.

Tuesday : Manchester vs. North Miami, 7 p.m.

Wednesday : Northfield vs. Oak Hill. Wed, 6 p.m.

Wednesday: Cass vs. Wabash. Wed, 7:30 p.m.

Friday : Southwood vs. Manchester/North Miami winner 6  p.m.

Friday : Northfield/Oak Hill winner vs. Cass/Wabash winner 7:30 p.m.

Saturday : Championship  7:30 p.m.

Southwood boys down Maconaquah

The Southwood boys’ varsity basketball team won at Maconaquah, 62-39, Saturday. With the win the Knights have won seven games in a row and nine of their last 10 to move their season record to 12-8, securing a third straight winning season.

Leaders were: Alex Harmon 16 points, 13 rebounds,  4 blocks,  2 steals; Matt Nose 12 points,  4 rebounds; Carson Blair 11 points,  4 assist,  5 rebounds,  2 steals; Noah Kirk 9 points,  6 assist,  3 steals, and Robbie Cole 6 points, 6 rebounds,  2 assist.

Wabash boys come from behind, beat Blackford

The Wabash boys’ basketball team used a 22 point fourth quarter Saturday to come from behind in a 57-52 win over Blackford.
The Apaches were tied 23-23 at the half before Blackford won the third quarter 17-12 to lead 40-35 with a quarter to go. Wabash would pick up the pace of the game on both ends of the floor in the fourth, winning the quarter 22-12 and the game 57-52.

Norse boys fall to Valley

The Northfield boys’ basketball team braved the harsh weather Saturday when they went on the road for an afternoon game at Tippecanoe Valley, falling to the Vikings 74-66.

Using a balanced scored attack the Norse led 20-18 after one before losing the second quarter 17-11 to trail 35-31 at the half. Valley would win the second half 39-35 for the 74-66 final.

Squires top Whitko for share of TRC title

The Manchester boys’ basketball team went on the road to Whitko on Saturday, defeating the Wildcats 58-47 to secure a share of the TRC title. The win gave Manchester its first conference championship since 2001.

The Squires would lead 14-12 after the first stop using a balanced scoring attack with four players scoring. David McAtee led the attack with 6 points on two three pointers with Chase Fierstos, Braydon Sewell and Chainey Zolman scoring.
