Squires notch first win of season

The Manchester Squire football team not only won its first game of the season, but defeated traditional Three Rivers Conference power Rochester for the first time since 2002 with a 34-14 win over the Zebras.
 
Manchester took control early when Jared Gable scored on the Squires' first possession of the game with a touchdown run with 8:49 left in the first quarter for a 7-0 lead.
 
Rochester threatened to score early in the second quarter with the ball on the Squires' 8-yard line, but Manchester stopped the Zebras on fourth and two to get the ball back.

Northfield girls advance in cross country

MARION -- The Northfield Girls’ Cross Country Team placed third in the 11-team Marion Sectional on Saturday.  
 
The Lady Norse will advance to the IHSAA Regional next Saturday.  Olivia Thompson led the way with Natasha Leland two spots back.  The rest of the pack included Abbey Ross, Liz Moore, Michelle Hunt, Bailey Burcroff and Attie Schuler.  
 
The boys’ team placed sixth overall.  Advancing individuals are Noah Shear and Peyton Frye.

Lady Norse take second in own invitational

Northfield’s volleyball team captured second place in its own Norse Classic Invitational on Saturday.
 
The Lady Norse defeated Elwood 25-15 and 25-17 win the opening match. It followed that win up with a 25-22, 25-18 win over Eastside.
 
Woodlan would eventually stop Northfield, 16-25, 18-25, to win the championship.

Pairings set for TRC playoffs

The pairings have been set for the first Three Rivers Conference football playoffs on Friday night.
 
Peru will travel to Whitko to play in the TRC championship contest.
 
Meanwhile, Southwood will travel to Rochester, and Wabash will travel to Tippecanoe Valley.

Lady Knights down North Miami for TRC win

Southwood’s volleyball team won its lone match last week, a 3-1 victory over North Miami on Tuesday, Oct. 6.
 
The Lady Knights won the first two sets en route to a four-set win. The scores were 25-10, 25-7, 12-25, 25-19.

Fall cross shoots to begin

The Wabash Chapter of the Izaak Walton League will start its fall cross shoots  on Oct. 11 and continue every Sunday through Dec. 6.  
 
The shoots will begin at 10am at the clubhouse located at 10439 S. Old S.R. 13 near Somerset.  Meat and cash prizes will be available.  The public is invited.

NORTH MANCHESTER -- The struggles continued for the Manchester Squire football team as they dropped to 0-7 and 0-5 in the Three Rivers Conference after a 35-0 loss to Whitko Friday night.
 
With a methodical, up-the-middle offense and a stifling defense, Whitko slowly ran away from the Squires on the Wildcats' Homecoming and Senior Night.
 
Manchester started the game with momentum after Quentin Moore recovered a fumble on Whitko's second play from scrimmage.

Squires fall in tennis sectional finals

PERU -- Heading into the boys' tennis sectional finals against Peru, the Manchester Squires knew it was going to be a close match with the Tigers, and they weren't wrong.
 
With the team score tied at 2-2, Peru clinched the sectional championship by pulling out the number two doubles match 6-3, 7-6 (7).
 
Manchester's two points came easily as Max Karg defeated Brandon Bates 6-3, 6-3 at one singles, while the number one doubles team of Noah Cain and Matthew Pegg won 6-3, 6-0 over Lucas Eckerly and Kameron Graham.
