Peru wrestlers win sectional crown; Several local wrestlers advance to regional

PERU – The Peru Tigers captured its wrestling sectional on Saturday, besting the eight-team field that included all four Wabash County high schools.
 
Manchester was the best finisher among the local schools, coming in third. Northfield was fourth, while Wabash placed seventh and Southwood was eighth.
 
The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to regional, which also will take place at Peru.

Wabash, Manchester swimmers split meets

The Wabash boys' swim team defeated Elwood, 74-67, on Wednesday. Meanwhile, the girls' team lost 97-63.
 
For the boys, the 200 yard medley relay team of Robert King, Cody Henderson, Jacob Bruss and Trace Goodwin finished first. Other first place finishes for Wabash's boys went to Ryan Evans in the 200 yard free; Bruss in the 200 IM; A.J. Price in the 500 yard free and Bruss in the 100 yard breaststroke.

Knights of Columbus plan free-throw contest

The Knights of Columbus will have a free-throw contest at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb.6, at the Wabash County YMCA.
 
The contest is open to boys and girls ages 9 to 14 as of Jan. 1, 2016.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m.

Girls’ teams gear up for sectionals

Wabash County’s girls’ basketball teams finished out their regular seasons last week.
 
On Tuesday, the local teams began playing in sectional action at Rochester High School.
 
Manchester played Oak Hill on Tuesday night, while Cass and Southwood will square off on Wednesday, followed by Rochester against Northfield.
 
Wabash will play the winner of Oak Hill and Manchester on Friday.

Boys Basketball: Norsemen down Rochester in TRC action

Northfield’s boys’ basketball team put four players in double figures Friday night as it defeated Rochester, 60-51, in a Three Rivers Conference matchup.
 
Noah Shear led Northfield with 20 points, while Cody Holmes and Austin Trump each had 14.
 
Kyle Reed added 12 points as Northfield improved to 9-7 on the season, 4-2 in TRC play.
 
The junior varsity fell, 55-35. Jared Peas had 10 points.

Mattern finishs 2nd in Elks Hoop Shoot District competition

Finishing second among the boys were 12-13 Boys Brayden Bontrager (from left), Kendallville; 10-11 Boys Ethan Jordan, Auburn; and 8-9 Boys, Mason Treesh, Kendallville. Finishing second among the girls were 12-13 Girls Elizabeth Stroop, Kendallville, Mattern and 8-9 Girls Marisea Rhea, Columbia City. Mattern was one of six local youth representing the Wabash Elks Lodge No.471. Others representing Wabash were  8-9 Girls Olivia Braun, fourth place; 8-9 Boys Gavin Betten, fourth place; finished in 4th place, 10-11 Boys Dillon Tomlinson, fourth place; 12-13 Girls Bailey Wyatt, fourth place, and 12-13 Boys, Rob Ford, fifth place. MHS names 2016 Athletic Hall of Fame inductees

NORTH MANCHESTER – Five Manchester High School athletes or coaches will be inducted into the school’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
 
The five, who were announced on Tuesday, Jan. 19, will be inducted on Friday, Feb. 26, during halftime of the boys’ varsity basketball game against Goshen High School.

Emmanuel’s Miller scores 1,000th career point

On Thursday, Jan. 14, Emmanuel Christian’s Jeff Miller scored his 1,000th point in a varsity basketball game.
 
The milestone came when Emmanuel was playing White’s Institute, and helped the Eagles to a 91–41 win.
 
Miller is the seventh Emmanuel player to reach the 1,000 point mark. He scored 37 points in the game, reaching the milestone in the fourth quarter. The game was stopped and Miller was presented with a game ball and pictures were taken with his coach, Merrill Templin.
