KoC host annual free throw contest

The Knights of Columbus had its annual Wabash Council Free Throw Championship on Saturday Feb.4 at the Wabash County YMCA gym.
The annual competition is for boys and girls ages 9 – 14. Since its beginning in 1972, over 2.5 million youths have participated in the contest. Last year more than 120,000 sharpshooters participated in over 3,600 local competitions.
Boys Basketball Sectional tips off on WebTV

If you look up Hoosier Hysteria in an encyclopedia or online, Hoosier Hysteria is described as follows: Hoosier Hysteria is the state of excitement surrounding basketball in Indiana, or more specifically the Indiana high school basketball tournament.
In part, the excitement stemmed from the inclusion of all tournament entrants into the same tournament, where a small town's David might knock off a large city's Goliath. The most famous example occurred in 1954, when Milan (enrollment 161) defeated Muncie Central (enrollment over 1,600) to win the State title. The plot of the now famous movie, Hoosiers, was based on the story of the 1954 Milan team and seems to typify the hysteria related to basketball in the state of Indiana.
Local disc golf club to host fundraising tourney Feb. 25

The Cannonball Disc Golf Club (CDGC) will host the Cannonball Winter Bash Disc Golf Tournament Saturday, Feb. 25, at Wabash City Park.
The tournament will help raise funds to improve the disc golf course at Wabash City Park, according to Josh Tart, CDGC president.
WHS’s Archer to run at St. Francis

Wabash High School senior Chelsea Archer will continue her running career at the University of St. Francis in Fort Wayne.
Archer signed a letter of intent to run cross-country and track for the Cougars during a brief ceremony at the WHS conference room.
Boys sectional pairings announced

The IHSAA boys sectional basketball pairings were drawn on Sunday in Indianapolis.
All four Wabash County teams are in Sectional 37 hosted by Oak Hill. It starts on Tuesday Feb. 28, with Lewis Cass (14-6) playing Manchester (6-14) in a 7 p.m. start. Then on Wednesday March 1, at 6 p.m., Wabash(8-12) plays Oak Hill (17-3) followed by Northfield (8-12) against Southwood (16-4).
SHS trio to continue football careers

Three Southwood High School football players signed letters of intent to continue their grid career next fall at two different universities.
Luke Perlich and Blake Martz will play next fall for Aurora University in Aurora, Ill., while Nathanael Fadil will continue his football career at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion.
“When we went up there, it just kind of felt like home,” Perlich said. “Everyone was welcome. You didn’t feel like you were just another player up there.”
Boys basketball in final weeks of regular season

The upcoming week in boys high school basketball produces some interesting matchups leading up to the final week of the regular season to follow.
On Tuesday evening, Southwood entertains Adams Central, Wabash travels to Eastbrook and Northfield hosts Maconaquah. On Friday, Southwood hosts Northfield in the Metro battle and Columbia City travels to Manchester. The lone game on Saturday will be Wabash traveling to Blackford.
County's wrestling season comes to end

Nine wrestlers represented Wabash County at the New Haven Semi-State Saturday morning at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum. Four grapplers won their first matches, but weren't able to grab at spot at the state finals with losses in their respective second round matches.
Northfield's Layne Evans was the first county wrestler to advance to the second round with a win by pin at the 1:59 mark over Northwood's Garrett Griffin in the 152 pound weight class. The Northfield senior saw his career come to a close with a loss Hunter Reed of Columbia City by pin in the second period. Evans finishes the season with a 35-5 record.
