Manchester girls grab TRC track title

The Manchester High School girls’ track team won its first Three Rivers Conference title since 1990, while the Squire boys’ team finished fourth.
On the girls’ side, Manchester won the team championship with 108.5 points, edging second place North Miami with 101. Southwood was fourth with 73.5, Northfield was fifth with 55, and Wabash was ninth with 34.
For the boys, Whitko won the team title with 123.5 points. Manchester had 77, Wabash was seventh with 43, Northfield was eighth with 39.5, and Southwood was ninth with 19.

Sunday, May 7, was the end of an era for me and a number of other sports freaks who frequent "the mothership" of ESPN. After more than 30 years of Sundays with “The Sports Reporters,” the network decided to do away with a show that basically spawned the trend of print sports writers becoming TV and radio sports authorities.
Of course, some came and went. Otherwise were very comfortable in front of a camera. Others, not so much. The original host was longtime New Yorker Dick Schaap. He hosted the show until he passed away in 2001. Long time jack of all trade studio host John Saunders to over the reins and ran the show until his untimely death during the summer of 2016. Mike Lupica, another New York writer has held down the anchor chair until now.
Bass and Bucks hosts archery contest

Eleven teams of archery students converged on Bass and Bucks on Saturday for an outdoor, 3-D archery contest.
“They’re shooting at 3-D animals, and there are scoring rings on the animals,” according to Josh Butcher, who oversaw the local contest. “Each participant will shoot 20 targets. We have two different 20 target courses set.
“How far they are shooting, yardage wise, will determine what course they are set on.”
Classic baseball matchups come to fruition

I wasn't sure that I would get the opportunity, but because of the inclement Indiana weather, I was able to take in the series last weekend between the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Red Sox, 2 of my favorite teams from Fenway Park. I couldn't watch on Friday night, so I listened to the Red Sox broadcast on the radio and an inning or two of the Cubs radio broadcast via MLB.com At Bat on my phone.
On Saturday I watched the FOX broadcast as well as the ESPN broadcast on Sunday night. After spending a lifetime of watching mediocre Cubs teams either on WGN or occasionally from Wrigley Field, and watching the Red Sox on the Extra Innings package over the years, it appeared to me that this was a friendly rivalry. Both teams are constructed similarly, with the influence of Boston native Theo Epstein and his baseball entourage and influence in both front offices.
Manchester sweeps county track meet

The Manchester High School track teams continued strong seasons with both the boys and girls teams winning the Wabash County championships.
Girls
The girls team won the team title with 88 points, followed by Southwood with 67, Northfield with 55, and Wabash with 29.
Manchester’s win was highlighted by Rae Bedke smashing the county record in the 3200m run.
Ford wins K of C's state free throw championship

David Ford of Wabash is the 2017 Knights of Columbus State Free Throw champion for the 12-year-olf boys division.
David hit 24 of 25 free throws to win the event on March 12 at the Sts. Frances & Clare of Assisi Roman Catholic Church and School in Greenwood.
There were 68 competitors who contended for the state free throw titles.
Special Olympics seek volunteer for Area 5 games

Special Olympics of Wabash County is hosting the May 13 Track and Field for Area Five at the Wabash High School Track and Field.
The event will bring six counties to Wabash starting with the opening ceremonies at 8:30 a. m.
Athletes will be competing in field events: running and standing long jump, softball and tennis ball throw, shot put, and javelin throw. Track events will be 10 M walk/runs to 400 and 800 walk/runs.
The pleasures of ball park food

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of attending an Indiana Pacers game with a few of my buddies. Of course we talked sports the entire trip to Indianapolis. Our seats were down close. In fact, Larry Bird and Donnie Walsh's seats were over our shoulder.
We could have stopped at any fine restaurant in the area but opted for a good old fashioned hot dog and a beverage before the game started. There's something about a "ballpark hot dog." Several years ago, arenas and ballparks upgraded the entire menu to higher quality items. Next, there was the trend of attracting more fans by diversifying the food items and even bringing in local favorites depending upon the region. Say for instance, in Milwaukee German favorites highlight the menus. Bratwurst for everyone! In Texas, beef barbecue highlights the cuisine. In Petco Park in San Diego, fish tacos debuted.
