Norse defeat Vikings for conference victory

Northfield enjoyed a balanced offensive attack Friday, rushing for 164 and passing for 148 in a 27-7 victory over Tippecanoe Valley in local prep football action.


Quarterback Levi Fulkerson ran for a pair of first half touchdowns, and Clayton Tomlinson added a 55-yard interception return for a score as the Norse (2-2) built a 21-0 lead by the half.


The squads traded scores in the third quarter to round out the scoring.


Braden Ripplinger scored on a seven-yard run with 2:02 left in the third to put the Norse up 27-7.


Fulkerson led Northfield with 13 carries for 68 yards, and completed 7-of-11 passes for 148 yards through the air.


Cole Rosen added nine carries for 43 yards, and two catches for 51 yards.

Manchester wins TRC golf title

HUNTINGTON -- Manchester won the Three Rivers Conference championship at Norwood Golf Course Saturday, Sept. 8.


Kelsey Eichenauer won the individual championship for the third straight season for the Squires a score of 109.


"I'm so proud of all of our girls," Manchester coach Josh Troyer said. "[Having four of the six, and all in the top 23 is a great accomplishment.


The Squires won the team title end the tournament with a 357.

Wabash won all three sets, but Manchester kept it close in each set, in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-15 Apache win Thursday, Aug. 30.


Both head coaches felt their teams didn't play to their potential.


“We didn't play our best,” Wabash coach Katie Cromer said. “We had too many unforced errors. Manchester was aggressive, and they pushed us.”


Manchester coach Melissa West felt her team went out ready, but also said they may have been too ready.


“We came out wound tightly,” she said. “We were hyped up, and I like that energy.


“We need to learn to manage that energy.”

TRC grid season set to begin Friday

We are almost to the halfway point of the regular season already of high school football.  Remember when Homecoming games were in late October and the weather was frightful? Not anymore, we are only at the first full weekend of September and the weather is still very warm and homecoming games are on the horizon … But I digress.


Matchups for week 4 include Southwood traveling to North Miami, Tippecanoe Valley being hosted by Northfield, Manchester traveling to Peru and Wabash plays host to Maconaquah. Those are all Three Rivers Conference games. Kickoff at all sites is 7 p.m.

Squires blank Apaches, 6-0

In a county match-up, the Manchester boys soccer team shut out the Wabash Apaches 6-0 Thursday, Aug. 23.


Manchester's defense gave up one shot on goal.


“Great job by Logan Isbell, Ridge Fierstos, Dylan Brubaker, Klayton Hendrix, Sam Reichenbach, Elijah Burlingame and Tim Maser on defense, and Konrad Borgmann in goal,” Manchester coach Dave McKee said.


Offensively, Caleb Stout and Eric Morales led the Squires with two goals each, followed by Justin Self and Isaiah Davis with one apiece.

Squires-Apaches game slated for WebTV coverage

Week No.3 of high school football is upon us. 


In last week’s action, Wabash lost to Alexandria, 28-21, falling 0-2 early on. Northfield beat Peru 43-22 to even its record at 1-1. Southwood is 2-0, beating Oak Hill, 20-7. Manchester lost to Bluffton, 36-21, and are now 0-2.


Fortunes can change is a hurry, and usually do.


Here’s the schedule for this weekend. Northfield will travel to Southwood for the Metro Bowl, and Wabash will be hosting Manchester at Alumni Field.

Wabash County teams go 2-2 in football action

Wabash’s football squad took to the road for the second week in a row, and suffered a similar fate to week one in a 28-21 loss to the former Central Indiana Conference foe Alexandria Tigers.


Devin Higdon scored on a one-yard plunge to put Wabash up early in the first quarter, 7-0.


Jared Holley found paydirt on a 20-yard run to help give the Apaches a 13-6 halftime lead.


Alexandria (2-0) scored the next three touchdowns to take control of the contest, 28-13 in the fourth quarter.


Payton Sodervick scored on a nine-yard pass from Jared Holley, and then ran for the two-point conversion for pull the Apaches to within a touchdown at 28-21, but time ran out for the Apaches.

Knights down Squires in season opener

Southwood scored early and often to open its season with a 33-0 shut-out of Manchester Friday, Aug. 17.


Jackson Simons intercepted a pass from Devin Marcum on the first play from scrimmage, which led to  a touchdown run from Gabe Lloyd for a 6-0 lead.


The score remained 6-0 into the second quarter, with both Manchester's and Southwood's defenses hold their ground.
However, Lloyd broke free for his second score with a 5-yard run to give the Knights a 12-0 lead.
