Vogel advances to State Finals

Wabash’s Dereck Vogel finished 14th in Saturday’s New Haven Cross County Semistate in a time of 16:15, punching his ticket to the state finals.


Wabash finished eighth as a team, mission out on a chance to advance as a team.


Southwood’s Braden Sweet finished 28th at 16:39 to cap his sophomore year.


Wabash’s Koby Prater and Zackary Reed finished neck and neck. Prater took 43rd in 16:50.4, and Reed followed closely behind in 44th in 16:50.6.

Knights advance in sectional play

Class 3A No. 3-ranked Southwood was the only Wabash County School to advance in IHSAA sectional play Friday with a 44-6 victory over visiting Eastside.


Gabe Lloyd led the charge with 25 carries for 191 yards and two touchdowns for the Knights (10-0).


Quarterback Alex Farr carried 19 times for 62 yards and a score. Farr also completed 8-of-16 passes for 145 yards, a touchdown and an interception.


Logan Barley led the receiving corps with four catches for 58 yards and a touchdown.


Carson Rich added three grabs for 53 yards and a TD.


Elijah Sutton led the defense with 11 tackles. Jackson Simons recovered a fumble, caused a fumble and blocked a kick in the win, while Dillion Filip blocked a punt.


Braden Barney rounded out Southwood’s highlights with an interception return for a touchdown.

Boilermaker win shows there's more to life than football games

Knights win TRC football championship

Southwood scored a touchdown and PAT in overtime to outlast visiting Tippecaoe Valley 21-20 Friday night, Oct. 12  and claim the program’s second straight Three Rivers Conference title.


Carson Heath hauled in a TD pass from Alex Farr on fourth down, and Jackson Simons drilled the PAT after Valley scored and missed its PAT to send the Class A No. 3-ranked Knights in to celebration.


Southwood ran the ball 41 times for 136 yards on a night bogged down by rain.


Gabe Lloyd scampered for a pair of touchdown runs in the victory.


The Knights advance to 9-0 on the season. They host Eastside in the opening round of IHSAA Sectional play Friday.

Wabash Lady Apax win sectional volleyball title.

Wabash’s volleyball squad outlasted Rochester Saturday night, Oct. 13, in five sets to claim the Class 2A North Miami Sectional title, 25-23, 27-29, 25-21, 27-29, 15-11.


Tabby Wagner led the Lady Apaches (31-3) with 10 points, 18 kills and 10 digs.


Alivia Short had nine kills and nine digs for Wabash, while Sam Irgang added seven points and 10 kills.
Miriah Wyatt finished with seven kills and nine stuff blocks.


Brooke Irgang had a superb all-around game with 15 points, seven kills, 39 assists and 23 digs.


Kaylee Graff added 14 points, 13 assists and 25 digs, Kiley Stone finished with eight kills and Kendyl Fields added 10 digs.


Kenzie Hayslett finished with 10 points and 40 digs, and Abby Vinopal added seven points and 28 digs.


Wabash advanced to the finals with a win over Manchester on Saturday morning, 25-12, 25-18, 25-21.


Wabash (31-3) advances to the Class 2A Taylor Regional, where it will face Frankton in the first round at noon.

Wabash boys capture schools first cross country regional championship

The Wabash boys cross country team captured its first regional championship in school history Saturday, Oct. 13, at the Marion regional at Indiana Wesleyan University.


The Apaches easily outlasted runner-up Belmont, 37-69. Huntington North (96), Oak Hill (101) and New Haven (116) rounded out the top five.


The Apaches put five runners in the top 16 to win in dominant fashion.


Dereck Vogel led Wabash in second place in a time of 16:10. Zackary Reed followed in fifth in 16:32.


Koby Prater finished in eighth for the Apaches in 16:35. Aaron Nickerson rounded out the top 10 in 16:39, and Blakley Cole rounded out the team’s top five in 16th place in 16:51.

Apache boys win cross country sectional

Wabash’s boys cross country team won its first sectional title in 31 years Saturday, Oct. 6.


The Apaches placed five runners in the top 11 and seven in the top 20 to finish with 37 points, topping runner-up Oak Hill, who finished with 56 points. Huntington North was third, Southwood was sixth and Northfield was ninth.


Junior Dereck Vogel finished fourth to lead the Apaches at 17:09. Sophomore Zackary Reed followed in fifth place at 17:14.

Apaches fall short at Valley

Wabash’s football squad came up just short in a 35-27 loss to Tippecanoe Valley on October 5.


Trailing 35-20 in the fourth quarter, Logan Vander Velden hauled in a 10-yard touchdown pass from Jared Holley to pull the Apaches (1-7) within eight at 35-27, but Wabash was unable to muster any more offense.


Holley led the Apaches in passing the rushing. He completed 10-of-21 passes for 109 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He also ran nine times for 69 yards and a score.
