Apaches win county wrestling invitational

Wabash’s wrestling squad boasted eight individual champions on its way to claiming top honors in Saturday’s Wabash County Invitational.


Jared Brooks (106), R.J. Steg (113), Ethan Higgins (120), Braden Brooks (126), Robert Barnett (132), Anthony Long (138), Traydon Goodwin (152) and Justin Samons (220) each claimed individual titles for the Apaches.


Manchester finished second with a 4-1 record.


Trescott (170), Delton Moore (182) and Bryce Kamphues (285) each claimed individual titles.


“Several wrestlers stepped up for the team and got victories going up a weight class, including Delton Moore, who won the county title at 182,” Manchester coach Byron Sweet said. Bryce Kamphues and Trescott Duffy both remained undefeated on the year as well after picking up key victories for the team. The entire team had a solid showing, with 10 of 14 varsity spots having a winning record on the day.”

Wabash boys open season with win

The Wabash boys basketball squad opened the 2018-19 season with a 53-43 victory over Class 2A No. 3-ranked Oak Hill Golden Eagles on Wednesday, Nov. 21
Trenton Daughtry led the way for the Apaches with 19 points and six assists.
Elijah Vander Velden finished with 10 points and five rebounds, and Logan Vander Velden added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Wabash returned to action Saturday, Nov. 24 and fell at Madison-Grant, 73-70, in overtime.
The Apaches battled back from a 40-28 halftime deficit, but came up short in overtime.
Daughtry again led Wabash with 24 points, six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Logan Vander Velden added 23 points, six rebounds and four steals, and Blake Gribben chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

ECS wins volleyball title

Emmanuel Christian School's volleyball squad recently won its third straight Indiana Asssociation of Christian Schools state volleyball tournament. MUNCIE – The Emmaunel Christian volleyball squad dominated its way through the competition Oct. 26 and Oct. 27, winning its third straight Indiana Association of Christian Schools state volleyball championship.


The Eagles never lost a set in the tourney.


After claiming the last two state titles, Emmanuel was seeking a three-peat.

Knights fall in sectional finals

MONROE -- Southwood’s undefeated run through the season was emphatically cut short Friday night in a 38-0 road loss to Adams Central.


The Class A. No. 2 Flying Jets built a 31-0 lead by the half and coasted to the victory.


The No.3 Knights were held to nine first downs in the loss, and were limited to 151 total yards.

County schools open girls season with wins

Wabash’s girls basketball squad opened the season with a 44-39 win over Elwood on Saturday night at Coolman Gymnasium.


The Lady Apaches built a 19-6 by the end of the first quarter, then upped their advantage to 29-15 by halftime before holding on in the second half.


Seven different girls scored for Wabash, led by Hope Unger’s 12 and Mariah Wyatt’s 11.


Wabash hosts Mississinewa Nov. 9 before traveling to Marion on Nov. 10.

Lady Apaches fall in semi-state play

FRANKFORT – Wabash High School’s volleyball squad saw its season come to an end Saturday, Oct. 27 in the IHSAA Class 2A North Semistate against North Judson, 25-22, 25-22, 25-20.


The Lady Apaches were kept out of system all night, struggling mightily to receive serves for much of the match.


Wabash jumped out to a 9-4 lead in the first set with the help from an ace from Brooke Irgang and a pair of kills from Tabatha Wagner, enticing NJ to call a timeout.


Wabash miscues late in the set allowed NJ to take over a pull out the win.

Knights advance in grid sectionals

FREMONT -- The Southwood football squad rolled to 11-0 Friday night with a 37-6 victory over Fremont in sectional semifinal action.


The Class A No. 3-ranked Knights built a 28-0 lead by the half and never looked back. Fremont scored its lone touchdown in the fourth quarter.


Junior Gabe Lloyd continued his tear through the season, finishing with 17 carries for 209 yards and two TDs to lead the Knights.

Lady Apaches advance to Semistate

Wabash High School’s volleyball squad picked up a pair of wins on Saturday, Oct. 20, at the Taylor Regional to advance to the semistate for the first time in program history.


In the opener, The Apaches (33-3) dispatched Frankton in three games, 25-23, 31-29, 25-19.


Alivia Short led the Lady Apaches with 12 kills and 12 digs. Tabby Wagner added seven kills and nine points.
