Lady Apache VB team gets 2 wins

The Wabash Apache volleyball team squeaked out a 3-2 win over Oak Hill Tuesday, Aug. 27 with a 25-21, 25-14, 20-25, 18-25, 17-15 score.

Emma Tracy led the way with 18 points, 12 assists and 19 digs, Haylie Faust added 12 points, eight kills and 19 digs, and Lexi Westendorf recorded six points, 20 assists and 11 digs.

The JV team beat Oak Hill 25-15, 25-10.

Kandon Pries had 11 points and Kendra Wiles had 15 points and 10 assists.

The Wabash varsity team swept Eastbrook 25-9, 25-18, 25-18 Wednesday, Aug. 28

Mariah Wyatt had 11 points, eight kills and nine digs, Tracy had seven points, nine assists and 11 digs, and Faust added nine points, six kills and 18 digs.

Manchester boys blank Wabash, 7-0

A big second half led the Manchester boys soccer team to a 6-0 win over county and conference rival Wabash Thursday, Aug. 29 at Wabash.

Manchester's Harley Kruschwitz scored four goals and added an assist to lead the Squire offense.

Kruschwitz scored the only goal of the first half but the Squires turned on the offense in the second half.

Sam Reichenbach and Caleb Stout also scored for the Squires.

“[Our] midfield and defense controlled the game from start to finish,” Manchester coach Dave McKee said.
Manchester improved to 3-0 and 2-0 in Three Rivers Conference play.

In other soccer action, the Wabash varsity boys had its way with Tippecanoe Valley in a 7-0 conference win Aug. 27.

Knights post county's lone grid win

Southwood High School defeated Maconaquah, 20-17, on Friday, Aug. 23, in the opening game of the 2019 IHSAA football season.

The Knights scored 14 of their 20 points in the last half of the fourth quarter.

Logan Barley was 9-13 passing for 163 yards and two touchdowns.

Rushing, Alex Farr was 5 for 54 yards, Gabe Lloyd was 10 for 48 yards, and Barley, 13 for 26 yards.

Lloyd scored the Knights’ first TD in the second quarter.

Wabash soccer team ties Maconaquah

Wabash High School boys varsity soccer team defeated Maconaquah 4-0 on Saturday, Aug. 24.

Midfield was dominated by Wyatt Davis and Tre Lopez, both creating multiple chances for the Apaches. Mario Melendez scored twice for Wabash. Braden Brooks and Wyatt Davis each scored a point as well.

Lady Norse take 2nd at Peru tourney

The Northfield volleyball team finished second on Saturday in the Tomahawk Tourney in Peru.

The Lady Norse began with a win against Caston, 25-10, 25-7, and then defeated South Adams 19-25, 25-10, 15-8.

In semifinal play, Northfield defeated Wabash, 25-18, 27-25.

They finished the tournament with a loss to Northwestern, 6-25, 25-12.

In the championship contest,  Morgan Meyer had 2 points, 2 serve receptions, and 2 digs; Elise Gottschalk had 5 serve receptions, 1 assist  and 3 digs; Kearston Stout had 2 kills, 2 solo blocks, 2 assist blocks and 1 dig; Kenzie Baer had 4 kills,  4 serve receptions, and 4 digs; Madison Shrider had 9 serve receptions, 2 assist blocks, and 2 digs; Abigail Hunter had 1 point, 1 ace, 1 assist block, 8 assists, and 8 digs; Emily Pennington had 1 kill, 1 solo block, and 1 assist block; Addi Baker had 3 points, 4 kills, 11 serve receptions, and 9 digs.

Apax win golf tourney

Wabash High School varsity girls finished first at the Wabash County Invitational on Saturday Aug. 17 with a total score of 376 points.

Bella Carrillo and Annie Cole both shot 86, with Halle Miller and Lindsey Mattern not far behind, with scores of 101 and 103, respectively. Lacey Crist also competed for the apaches with a final score of 126.

Northfield High school came in second with points totaling 401. Emma Wynn and Ainsley Dale both scored their 18-hole personal bests with an 88 each. Alex Cartwright fired a 104, Briana Williams with a 121, and Ella Satterthwaite carded a 125.

Local runners open cross country season

Wabash High School varsity girls cross country team was defeated by Norwell with a score of 45-301 in the Dog Days of August Run at Norwell High School on Aug. 17.

The team was able to walk away with a complete team score for their first time in two years at this meet.

Senior Angel Wehrly finished first for the team with a time of 28:20. Next came Sierra Hall, a junior, with a time of 28:40.

Senior Camile Kugler followed not far behind with a time of 30:02. Junior and new-comer, Madison Bartoo, completed her first cross country race with a time of 32:09. Freshman Grace La Mar pulled in 5th for the team with a time of 33:29.

The Lady Apaches will continue their season next weekend on Aug. 24 at the Huntington Invitational.

MHS golfer bows out at regional

Wabash County’s high school golfers took to two separate golf courses for IHSAA sectional action in recent days.


Manchester golfer Harley Kruschwitz shot a 75 in sectional play at Rozella Ford Golf Club in Warsaw, to advance to the regional round. He shot a 79 in the regional play Swan Lake Resort.
