One extra-point made the difference between victory and defeat in Northfield's 49-48 overtime win over Manchester Friday, Sept. 20 at Manchester.

Northfield looked to be in control of the game early with the Norse scored on a 13-yard run by Jarret Shafer two minutes into the game. He followed that with a 9-yard touchdown run with 3:36 left in the first quarter for a 14-0.

Manchester's Tyce Rooney answered right back with an 88-yard kick-off return to cut the lead to 14-7 after a Klayton Hendrix extra point with 3:20 left in the quarter.

With 19 second left in the first quarter, Graydon Holmes scored on a 54-yard pass from Levi Fulkerson for a 21-7 Norse lead.

Wabash won its first girls golf sectional championship in school history Saturday, Sept. 21 at the Eastbrook Sectional at Arbor Trace Golf Course.

The Apaches shot a team score of 371 edging both Northfield and Huntington that shot 372, all of which qualify the teams for regional.

Manchester's Sam Kissell also advanced to regional as an individual placing in the top three among teams not qualifying.

Wabash was led by Annie Cole with a 42-47-89. Right behind her were Bella Carrillo with a 41-49-90, Halle Miller with a 49-45-94, Lindsey Mattern with a 49-49-98, and Lacy Crist with a 51-48-99.

The Southwoood Knights steadily pulled away from county and conference rival Northfield Friday, Sept. 13 for a 20-6 win over the Norse.

After a scoreless first quarter, Southwood's Gabe Lloyd scored on a three-yard run for a 7-0 lead with 9:14 left in the first half.

The Knight's Dawson Filip scored with 41 seconds left in the half on a 27-yard pass from Alex Farr to give Southwood a 13-0 halftime lead.

In the third quarter Farr hit Carson Rich for a 22-yard touchdown pass for 20-0 lead.

The Norse finally got on the board with Levi Fulkerson hit Clayton Tomlinson for a four-yard pass play to cut it to 20-6.

For Southwood, Farr threw for 124 yards on 8-18 attempts with two touchdowns and one interception.

Northfield pulled out a squeaker over the Wabash Apaches 19-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-14, 15-10, on Thursday night.

For Northfield, Morgan Meyer  had five points, 10 serve receptions, and 10 digs; Elise Gottschalk  had 10 points, 1 ace, 1 kill, 24 serve receptions, and 23 digs; Kearston Stout three points, an ace, six kills, and 10 digs; Kenzie Baer 12 points, two aces, nine kills, and 25 digs; Madison Shrider had six kills and six digs; Abigail Hunter eight points, an ace, three kills, and nine digs; Emily Pennington had five kills, and four digs; Addi Baker had seven points, an ace, and 15 digs

For Wabash, Alivia Short had seven points, 18 kills and seven digs, Mariah Wyatt had 11 points, 19 kills and seven digs, Jordan Stumbo had seven kills, Faryn Morris had two points, seven kills and 10 digs, Brook Westendorf had nine points, 36 assists and 10 digs, Tracy had seven points, 10 assists and 14 digs, Haylie Faust had two points and 51 digs, and Kyndal

Fields had eight digs.

Led by Bella Carrillo winning medalist honors with an 82, the Wabash Apaches won the Three Rivers Conference girls golf championship with a team score of 370.

Peru was second with a 375, beating Maconaquah that also scored 375, on the fifth-golfer tiebreaker.

Rochester was fourth with a 388, followed by Northfield with a 393, Whitko with a 398, Manchester with a 427, Tippecanoe Valley with a 114 and North Miami with a 465.

All three competing Wabash County schools were represented on the All-Conference team with Carrillo and Annie Cole for Wabash, Sam Kissell for Manchester and Emmy Wynn for Northfield.

In a dramatic back-and-forth battle between county and conference rivals, the Manchester Squires held on for a 21-14 win over the Wabash Apaches Friday, Sept. 6.

The Squires took the lead in the first quarter when Braxton Ream scored on an eight-yard run with 3:35 left and Klayton Hendrix made it 7-0 with the extra point.

The Apaches answered back with a 22-yard pass connection for a touchdown from Payton Sodervick to Bryant Boggs with 3:20 left in the second quarter. Grant Caradante's extra point tied the game at 7-7.

The Squires came right back with a drive late in the half and took a 14-7 lead when Devin Marcum found Kreeden Krull in the end zone for a nine-yard ouchdown with 42 seconds remaining.

After a scoreless third quarter, Wabash tied the game again on a one-yard touchdown run from Kallen Kelsheimer, with 9:37 remaining in the game.

The Squires converted two fourth-downs on their next drive, with the second resulting in a score when Ream crossed the goal line for the second time, giving the Squires a 21-14 lead with 3:23 left.

With one league championship already in its back pocket, the Wabash United Futbol Club is getting ready to, literally, kick off its second season.

Competing in the North East Select Soccer League (NESSL) of the Indiana Soccer League, the Wabash United 13-and-under (13U) squad captured the Spring title with eight wins and two ties.

That 13U group will compete in the 14-and-under (15U) age group this Fall, with play scheduled to begin Sept. 9, according to Solomon Vanderpool, president of the WUFC. The club will also field a team in the 12-and-under (12U) age group and one in the 10-and-under (10U) age group.

In its first season, the local club fielded two 13U teams and one 11U squad. The U13 Maroon squad took second place and the White team finished fourth. The 11U did not fare as well, finishing in the bottom half of the standings.

Over the winter in The Plex League, held at an indoor arena in Fort Wayne, the 13U combined squad also took second place.

Other clubs competing in the NESSL include (with number of teams in parenthesis) are Angola, Columbia City, Fort Wayne United, Huntertown (2), Huntington United (2), Jay County (2) and The Plex (3).

The Manchester girls cross country team placed fifth out of 27 teams competing at the Manchester Invitational Saturday morning, Sept. 7.

Freshman Josie Briner led the Squires with a 10th place finish in a time of 20:48.22.

Sophomore Kambree Cashdollar crossed the finish line in 21st place in 20:54.84, and Halle Briner was 45th overall with a time of 21:47.10.

Anna Markham was 90th with a time of 22:46, followed by Sydney McLaughlin in 23:34.81, Maddy Evans in 23:47.85, Skye

McCullough in 24:04.07, Ainsley West in 24:42.17, and Kiera Hatfield in 24:56.47.

The Manchester boys team finished 11th out of 27 teams Saturday.

Carter Bedke led the Squires with an 18th place finish in 17:26.07, followed by Raven King in 73rd place in 18:44.53.

Cade Jones finished in 61st place in 18:58.90, Raice Martin was 83rd in 19:35.02, and Elijah Burlingame was fifth in 89th place in 19:40.90.
