The Northfield Lady Norse left little doubt of the outcome of its game with Southwood Tuesday night, Jan. 26, running away with a 63-34 win.

Northfield took a 20-10 lead after one quarter and extended the lead to 38-17 at halftime. The Lady Norse outscored the Lady Knights in each the third and fourth quarters, as well.

Kyra Kennedy led Northfield with 19 points, five rebounds, and four steals, followed by Addie Baker with 12 points, nine rebounds, and three assists, Kearston Stout with 10 points, three rebounds, four steals, and two assists, Emma Hoover with nine points, four rebounds, six assists, and four steals, Hannah Holmes with eight points and three rebounds, Kenzie Baer with four points, three rebounds, three steals, and two assists, and Jaycee Krom with one point and one rebound. Eden Hoover had four rebounds, and Addy Rosen had two rebounds and one steal.

Ella Haupert led Southwood with 15 points, followed Bailey Wyatt with 11 points, Maggie Ball with four points, and Aleia Sweet with three points.

Northfield won the JV game 43-21.

Wabash High School senior Jordan Stumbo recently signed a letter of intent to continue her volleyball career at Rock Valley College in Rockford, Ill.

“I decided on Rock Valley because the head coach, Kristy Pierce, has had amazing success with her past teams and she made me feel extremely welcome,” Stumbo told The Paper of Wabash County.  “I hope to contribute not only my skills but my energy and optimism.”

Wabash High School senior Mariah Wyatt will continue her volleyball career at Indiana University East.

Wyatt signed a letter of intent to play at the school during a brief ceremony at WHS on Monday, Jan. 18.

“I had (IUE coach Kim McConaha) as a coach for a club in Fort Wayne,” Wyatt said. “I just like the way she coached.”
McConaha said it was because of her play on the club team that she recruited Wyatt.

Senior Halle Briner and junior Josie Briner each won two events at the Three Rivers Conference meet Friday, Jan. 22, at Maconaquah High School.

Halle Briner won the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.36 and the 100 back in 1:00.76.

Josie Briner won the 200 free with a time of 2:02.46 and the 100 butterfly in 1:02.47.

Manchester finished second among the six-team field with 164 points, while Wabash was fifth with 116 points, and Northfield’s Ella Hunter garnered 25 points as the school’s only swimmer.

The Northfield and Southwood girls basketball teams kick off the IHSAA Class A Sectional 53 at Northfield Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, Feb. 2, 5, and 6.

The Wabash County and Three Rivers Conference rivals will face each other in the only game of the opening round Tuesday night, Feb. 2, at 7 p.m. Northfield currently sports a 14-5 record while Southwood is 7-9.

The winner of the first-round game will face Lakeland Christian Academy (5-4) Friday, Feb. 5 at 7:30 p.m. Southern Wells (4-15) will battled North Miami (3-15) in the first game Friday night.

After a close start with Northfield and Manchester tied 8-8 midway through the first quarter, the Lady Norse outscored the Lady Squires 25-5 over the rest of the first half and cruised to a 65-37 win.

Northfield led 15-8 at the end of the first quarter and outscored Manchester 18-5 in the second quarter for a 33-13 halftime lead.

Manchester found some offense in the third quarter, outscoring Northfield 14-17, but the Lady Norse slammed the door with an 18-7 fourth quarter.

Kearston Stout led the way for the Norse with 16 points, nine rebounds, and two steals, Emma Hoover had 14 points, four rebounds, two assists, and four steals, Addi Baker had 12 points, five rebounds, two assists, and five steals, and Kenzie Baer had 10 points, nine rebounds, and one assist.

Addy Rosen had eight points, one rebound, two assists, and four steals.

Manchester was led by Eva Bazzoni with nine points, three assists, and three steals, followed by Morgan Parrett with seven points and four rebounds.

Carson Rich scored 20 points, while Alex Farr added 20 points, leading the Southwood Knights to a 67-64 road win at Tippecanoe Valley Friday, Jan. 22.

A senior, Carson Rich scored the 1,000th point of his basketball career during fourth quarter action.

In a close game throughout, the teams went into halftime tied at 32-32.

The Vikings led 44-40 with two minutes left in the third quarter before Southwood struck.

Farr started a 13-0 run with a free throw, followed by a three-pointer from Carson Rich, a basket from Connor Rich, a three-point play from Carson Rich, and a jumper from Connor Rich, to give the Knights a 51-44 heading into the fourth quarter.

Carson Rich started the fourth quarter with a basket to complete the 13-0 run with a 53-44 lead.

The Vikings cut the lead to 55-54 with four minutes left in the game but a basket from Carson Rich and a three-pointer from Filip made it a 60-54 lead.

Valley used an 10-0 run to take a 64-60 lead with just over a minute left in the game.

Farr cut the lead to 64-63, followed by a Tippecanoe Valley miss, then hit the go-ahead basket to give the Knights a 65-64 lead, and Connor Rich sealed the win with two free throws.

The Wabash Apaches led Manchester 25-10 midway through the second quarter of the teams’ Three River Conference game at Manchester on Friday night, Jan. 15.

The Apaches led by a point in the final minute of the third quarter but the Squires took the lead after five straight points from Cade Jones and held on for a 69-58 win over the Apaches.

With the score tied 7-7 with 1:45 left in the first quarter, Wabash took the lead after baskets from Bryant Boggs and Joe Leland for an 11-7 advantage.

Manchester’s Maddox Zolman answered with a three-pointer but Boggs made it 13-10 in the final seconds of the quarter, starting a 14-0 Wabash scoring run.

Leland opened the second quarter with a three-pointer, followed by baskets from Boggs and Jasper Walter, two free throws by Walter, and another three-pointer from Leland.

The Squires answered with a run of their own, outscoring the Apaches 12-2 to end the first half.

Manchester’s Weston Hamby scored six points in the run with two points each from Max Carter, Brayden Jones, and Zolman, as the Squires trailed 27-22 at halftime.

Wabash continued to lead with just over two minutes left in the third quarter, then the Squires made their move.

Carter and Cade Jones converted back-to-back three-point plays to give Manchester a 37-36 lead.
