On Aug. 3, eight youth bowlers from Cannonball Lanes participated in the Luise Lesser Memorial Jamboree Scholarship Tournament at All Star Bowl in Indianapolis.

Those who participated were Allie Coon, Alex Miracle, Alex Sluss, Bailey Baker, Bobby Mettler, Katarina Rojas, Kyle Mettler and Olivia Sluss. Out of the 250 and participating in five different divisions, three bowlers from Wabash won scholarships.

Those receiving the scholarships were Olivia Sluss, who won first place in the girl’s 160+ average division; Bailey Baker won third place in the girls 160+ average division and Alex Sluss won fifth place in the boys 160+ average division.

Congratulations to all who participated. All participants from Wabash are also members of the Saturday morning youth league at Cannonball Lanes.

The words “down time” don’t exist in Emily Willmann’s vocabulary.

The Manchester University rising junior likes to stay busy whenever she can. This summer is a good example, as she is a lifeguard at a pool near her home in Montpelier, while holding down a job at a factory and also finding time to help the Blackford High School girls’ soccer coaching staff by working with the goalkeepers.

“I always have to be doing something,” she said with a laugh. “If I’m not busy, I’m going stir crazy sitting around.”

So, it would seem as no surprise that she has taken on a role as a two-sport student-athlete for the Spartans with much success. Willmann enters the fall as a two-time all-Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference honoree in women’s soccer which includes a first team selection last season, while her efforts on the Spartan softball diamond haven’t been overlooked, either, as she’s been the starting shortstop in each of the last two seasons.

Manchester University head track and field coach Brian Cashdollar and head women’s soccer coach Andy Stout announced that Jessica Bremer and David Sheridan have joined the Spartans’ athletics’ staff. Bremer will be an assistant for the Spartan track and field program, while Sheridan will assist with the MU women’s soccer program.

  Bremer, who earned a Bachelor of Science degree in exercise and sports sciences from Manchester University in May 2011, returns to her alma mater after serving as a graduate assistant for DePauw University’s cross country and track and field teams from 2011-13. She also has coaching experience from being an intern for the Huntington University cross country program in 2009 and a counselor for the Yoder-Begley and Three Rivers distance camps and DePauw’s cross country mini-camp from 2088-11 and in 2012.

Etna Acres Golf Course held their club championship on Aug. 3 and 4.

Devin Dale won the men’s title, firing a 72 and 78 for a two-day total of 150. Zac Tackett was a close second with a 156. Winning low net was Jeff Bosler with a 146. Tom Wright was second with a 150.

Mike Goetz is the senior champion with a 162. Todd Rebholz was on Goetz heels with a 163. Howard Nickel was first in low net with a 137. Larry Wright was second with a 149.

Dan Bickel won the super senior division with a 166. Larry Garrett was second with a 182. Low net winner was Larry Miller with a 144.

The ladies champion was JoDee Dale, firing a 188. Sandi Kastner was low net winner with a 158.

Winners of the Pot Luck scramble Sunday were Daryl Smith, Earl Harrell, Cheryl Chopson and Steve Shoptaw with a 36. Dan Bickel, Brad Crawford, Cecilia Smith and Debbie Reahard were second with a 36.

As students in Manchester University’s fourth Master of Athletic Training class begin coursework this month, optimism is high for the program’s early track record and prospects for expansion.

The degree is designed for students who did not major in athletic training as an undergraduate. While every athletic training master’s degree (MAT) gives graduates clinical, hands-on experiences, Manchester is unique for its added emphasis on training future teachers and researchers in the field. Each student in the two-year program completes a personal research project and teaches undergraduates.

“We want our graduates to be well-rounded candidates for athletic trainer positions,” says Mark Huntington, associate dean for academic affairs and director of the master’s program. “Gaining clinical, research and teaching experience is the advantage of attending a small school like Manchester.”

The Wabash 15 and 16- year-old all-star team was taking on Peru in a best of three series for the district title this weekend. After a convincing 10-0 win on the back of pitcher Nate Hembree Friday, Wabash was primed to take the title Saturday. With pitcher Remington Monce throwing bullets, Wabash cruised to an 11-0 win for the title.

Being the visitors on the scoreboard, Wabash wasted no time getting Monce a lead, scoring two runs in the first. With Kody Fuller calling the pitches, Monce was untouchable as he scattered just two hits in the shutout.

Wabash would go on to score two runs in the third, one in the fourth, one in the fifth, one in the sixth and four in the seventh to seal the deal.

The Wabash 13 and 14-year-old all-star team was taking on Peru in the best two out of three for the district title this past weekend. After winning a close 7-6 game on Friday, Wabash turned on the jets Saturday, using two big innings in a 23-3 win to claim the title.

Down 3-2 heading to the third, starting pitcher Kory Fuller found his groove to shut down Peru, letting his offense do the work in the bottom of the inning. Wabash collected nine hits in the inning, taking advantage of walks and Peru errors to plate 12 runs to take a commanding 14-3 lead.

Five Wabash County baseball players have been selected to the Class 2A All-State baseball team. Wabash's Shea Beauchamp and Northfield's Andy Roser and Ryan Keaffaber were selected to the first team. Wabash's Landon Cole and Northfield Collin Dawes garnered an Honorable Mention.
