Wabash Little League opens 69th season

Wabash Little League opened its 69th season on Saturday with the pomp and circumstances that surround most opening days.

Mayor Scott Long and League President Bryan Dillon addressed the crowd, Lillian Weaver, Miss Indiana Outstanding Teen, sang the national anthem, and Dr. Amy Sivley, Wabash City Schools superintendent, threw out the ceremonial first pitch. Grace Dafoe led the players in reciting the Little League oath.

A number of games followed throughout the afternoon at the Little League complex at the Field of Dreams.

City Schools considers change in school start time

The school board for Wabash City Schools decided April 18 to put a pin in a proposal designed to give middle school and high school students less down time in the morning.

The proposal, based on research on the sleep habits of adolescents, as well as the desire to eliminate lag time in the morning before classes begin, occupied nearly a half hour of the meeting. Superintendent Dr. Amy Sivley summarized the proposal, ultimately recommending an amendment to the original plan.

City Schools honors elementary students with Swan Awards

Wabash City Schools recognized the last of its Kathy Swan Award winners for the 2021-22 school year during the board district’s April 18 meeting of its board of trustees. Elementary School winners from OJ Neighbors Elementary School were first grader Lilly Smith, Johnathan Reed representing the second grade, Hunter Mabery from third grade and fourth grader Liam Kirtlan.

OJ Neighbors Principal Beth Phillipy introduced the teachers who presented this year’s awards.

Lagro residents hear updates on town improvements

The Town of Lagro has seen much change over the last five years. Local residents gathered Tuesday, April 5, at the 950 Speakeasy Bistro to learn about the changes, as well as to hear about things to come.

Beth Gillespie, president of the Lagro Canal Foundation, and Justin Gillespie, who owns the Speakeasy and the neighboring Riparian House with business partner, Beverly Van Haaften, were the main speakers at the event.
Tenille Zartman, Grow Wabash County vice president, and Christine Flohr, Visit Wabash County executive director, also spoke at the event, which lasted just short of one hour.

Parkview Wabash to get new president

Debra Potempa, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, has been named president of Parkview Wabash Hospital (PWB), effective April 18, 2022.

Marilyn Custer-Mitchell, who currently serves as president of PWB, will soon be retiring. Custer-Mitchell has served the Wabash community in a hospital leadership role for more than 14 years.

Self-Reliance applications available

Dates have been set for the 2022 Midwest Eye Consultants Self-Reliance Awards.

Applications and instructions are currently being distributed to guidance counselors at each of the county’s high schools.

New church to open in Wabash

Light City Bible Church will have its first ever Easter worship service on April 17 at 9:30 a.m. at the Wabash County YMCA, 500 S. Cass St., Wabash.

A core group of more than 20 adults have been meeting each Sunday evening since September of 2021 in preparation for the launch of Light City Bible Church.

Custer-Mitchell named Waypoint executive director

Waypoint Wabash, a substance use recovery home for women, announced today that the organization’s board of directors has appointed Marilyn Custer-Mitchell to serve as the organization’s first-ever executive director.

Custer-Mitchell has been in the healthcare industry for more than 35 years and currently is the President of Parkview Wabash Hospital. Upon her retirement from Parkview Wabash, she will begin her new role with Waypoint.
