2 WHS seniors sign to play sports collegiately

Two Wabash High School seniors signed letters of intent on Thursday, Jan. 16, to further their athletic careers in college.

Bella Carrillo signed to play golf at Manchester University, while Jared Holley signed to play baseball at Kankakee Community College in Kankakee, Ill.

Wabash Park Board gets new president

Eric Schoening is the new president of the Wabash Board of Parks and Recreation.

Schoening, whose appointed term on the Wabash City Council ended Dec. 31, was named to the board by Mayor Scott Long to replace Brian Campbell. Campbell asked not to serve any more on the panel.

Kerri Mattern was elected vice president and Bill Benysh was elected secretary.

City Schools Board elects president

The Wabash City School board met for the first time in 2020 on Monday, Jan. 6.

During this meeting the board:

Accepted donations totaling $28,800.

Elected and accepted Rod Kelsheimer as board president, Tony Pulley as vice president, and Rhonda Hipskind as secretary.

Grain bin accident claims local farmer

A North Manchester farmer died Monday, Jan. 6, as a result of a grain bin entrapment.

The farmer, Daniel Haupert, 66, died in the incident at a bin at 8479 N. State Road 13.

2 locals seek state position

Two Wabash County men have filed their candidacies with the Indiana Secretary of State to seek their parties’ nominations for the Indiana House of Representatives’ 18th District seat.

Republican Russell “Russ” Reahard and Democrat Chad Harris both filed their paperwork last week.

The seat is now held by Rep. Dave Wolkins, who has indicated he will not be seeking re-election. The seat makes up Wabash County and parts of Kosciusko, Grant and Miami counties.

Senior Center rings in 2020

Senior citizens of Wabash rang in 2020 at 12 noon on Tuesday at the Dallas L. Winchester Senior Center.

The group met at 11 a.m., listened to piano music by Roger Maureen followed by snacks, sparkling cider and a countdown to noon, symbolic of the countdown to midnight.

“Several years ago, we did this and we hadn’t done it for a few years and then we decided to do it again this year, and we do it at noon, because we are all awake then,” said Bev Ferry, CEO of Living Well in Wabash County.

Local officials sworn in

Officials from the City of Wabash and the towns of LaFontaine and Lagro received their oaths of office during a ceremony Tuesday afternoon, Jan. 31, at Wabash City Hall.

Indiana Supreme Court Justice Chris Goff and Wabash Circuit Court Judge Bob McCallen III administered the oaths to the elected officials.

Mayor Scott Long, City Court Judge Tim Roberts and Clerk-Treasurer Wendy Frazier were sworn in, along with Wabash City Council members Mitch Figert (District 1), David Monroe (District 2), Terry Brewer (District 3), Susan Bonfitto (District 4), Doug Adams (District 5) and Bryan Dillon and John Burnsworth (At-Large seats).

Sworn in from LaFontaine were Clerk-Treasurer Diana Heath, Deputy Clerk-Treasurer Pam Whitener, and Town Board members Lori Brane, Jay Gillespie and Ernest John Krhin.

Businessman to seek Indiana House seat

A Kosciusko County businessman has announced his plans to seek the Republican nomination for the Indiana House of Representatives District 18 seat in the May Primary Election.

The man, Alan Alderfer, is seeking the seat currently filled by David Wolkins.

Wolkins, who has served 14 terms in the Indiana House, doesn’t plan to seek re-election.

The district covers Wabash County as well as parts of Kosciusko, Miami and Grant counties.

Alderfer is a certified financial planner and is a partner with the firm Alderfer Bergen and Co., which began 20 years ago. He has been a financial planner for 26 years.
