Flack Family thanks many for Farm Family Award

A celebration honoring those in the agriculture industry took place Wednesday, March 11, at the Heartland REMC community room.

A crowd of 120 people was on hand to watch Steve and Lisa Flack accept the 2019 Farm Family of the Year Award on behalf of Flack Farms.

They also heard from John Sampson, President and CEO of the Northeast Regional Partnership, the night’s keynote speaker. The event was sponsored by Grow Wabash County’s Ag Committee.

The Flacks received the award from 2018 recipients Mike and Jay Reed of Reed Farms.

During an emotional acceptance speech, Steve Flack, with a little help from wife, Lisa, thanked all those involved with the dinner and selecting the farm for the honor.

New Song Church opens in Wabash

A new church has opened Wabash, located on State Road 13 right behind the Marathon gas station.
New Song Church, planted and pastored by Tony Mercer, is open and ready to welcome the public.

Everyone is welcome, Mercer told The Paper of Wabash County.

“You'll discover that our passion is to provide a place where people just like you can have a life-changing experience with God,” he said. “Our highest goal is to perpetuate the good news of grace, helping people become passionately devoted followers of Jesus.”

Guests visiting New Song Church for the first time can expect an exciting and welcoming atmosphere.

NM Center for History to host Smithsonian Exhibit

NORTH MANCHESTER -- Almost a year in the making, the North Manchester Center for History is gearing up for six weeks of fun, adventure and education.

North Manchester was one of six communities in Indiana selected by Indiana Humanities to host a Smithsonian traveling exhibit, “Crossroads: Change in Rural America,” as part of the Museum on Main Street program, a Smithsonian Institution program that works with rural communities to design and host high-quality exhibits across the United States.

The traveling museum will be in North Manchester from March 21 to May 2.

The six-week event kicks off with a ribbon cutting and open house Saturday, March 21.

The overall tone of the Smithsonian exhibit covers agriculture, education, industry and population change.

Exchange student program postponed

At the Wabash City Schools board meeting on Monday, March 2, it was announced that the exchange trip of Wabash High School students to China would be postponed for a year due to the dangers of the Coronavirus.

The program was to start with students from Yamate Gakuin High School in Yokohama, Japan, traveling to the United States during the first two weeks of April, followed by Wabash students traveling there in July.

Wabash High School principal Kyle Wieland told The Paper of Wabash County that although the cancelation is a letdown, it may be an opportunity for some positivity.

MSD Robotics teams compete at State

Six VEX Robotics teams from the Metropolitan School District of Wabash County (MSD) recently earned the honor of competing at the state level.

The teams traveled to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on Saturday, March 7, to compete with other teams around the State. 

In order to earn the way to state competition, teams must be awarded the “excellence” reward.

'Death by Chocolate' to be staged March 6-8

Officials from Wabash Area Community Theater (WACT) have announced that they are excited to present their spring comedy "Death by Chocolate", directed by Bruce Rovelstad. 

Nick Noir, played by Brett Robinson, is a private detective who has fallen on hard times and is forced to fire his devoted secretary, Selma, plyed by Charity Rankin. That is until Coco Purvis, played by Sandy Bendson, calls with details of a tantalizing case that might just pay off for Nick.

Coco Purvis and her sister, BonBon, played by Lin Metzger, run a local coffee shop called Precious Perks Coffee Shoppe. 

Their featured drink is "Death by Chocolate.”  Unfortunately, the name of the drink was all too true for Vinnie the Leach, a regular customer. Vinnie died after drinking it one month earlier.  Business has fallen off since then and Coco is asking for help in solving the crime.

Local Democrats meet congressional candidates

The Democratic candidates for Indiana’s 2nd Congressional House seat met with local party faithfuls on Tuesday night, Feb. 25.

The two, Pat Hackett and Ellen Marks, briefly spoke before the Wabash County Democrat Party meeting, then fielded questions from those present.

The women are both attorneys from South Bend. Hackett ran two years ago, coming in second in the Democrat Primary’s field of six candidates.

Marks said she is running to help create “a path to accessible, affordable insurance for everyone. We all know our healthcare system is broken.”
