Crossroads Bank is pleased to announce the members of their Junior Board of Directors for the 2013-14 school year.  The Junior Board consists of two high school juniors and two high school seniors from Manchester, Northfield, Southwood and Wabash High Schools.

The members this years are:  Manchester High School:  Adam Hanback, Mariah Mobley, Leah Sorg, Cole Mize; Northfield High School:  Alicia Agness, Taylor Peterson, Joe Burcroff, Kalanu Watson Dunn; Southwood High School:  Drew Rhamy, Alyson Gouveia, Noah Kirk, Grace Whitham; Wabash High School:  Thomas Grier, Jordan Rauh, Claire Cromer and Shelby Stone.

Sigma Phi Gamma Sorority, Nu Chapter, celebrated Founders’ Day Sept. 17 at the Main View Inn in Manchester.  Following the meal and candle lighting ceremony conducted by Renee Chenault, Mary Ann Mast was presented a gift in honor of receiving her 50-year pin at the annual International Convention in North Charleston, S.C. this summer.
Mary Ann Mast, currently Nu Chapter president, has held all chapter offices numerous times and was Province Secretary for one year. 

Now is the time for individuals with Medicare to review their Medicare coverage. Individuals with Medicare can compare and change their Medicare Advantage plan and/or prescription drug plan from Oct. 15 through Dec. 7. The coverage that has worked in the past may not be the best now, so it’s important to review the plan every year.

All children require a strong foundation during their early years to be ready to begin kindergarten, and, this fall, the Wabash County YMCA has launched CareTogether to help build that foundation. In this free program, children ages newborn to five years old meet twice a week for two hours to learn, grow and play together. Caregivers of the children (parents, grandparents, babysitters) are active participants in the program, playing and learning together with the child in their care. Children who may not be enrolled in formal preschool will learn skills they need for future schooling, while their caregivers learn how to better support their development at home.
 

The Dr. James Ford Historic Home, a restored 19th Century physician's home and surgery invites you to its first annual 19th Century Autumn Festival on Saturday, Oct. 5 from 1-5 p.m. This free festival offers demonstrations of some early American skills, snacks and activities for the entire family.

Enjoy a basket weaving demonstration by JoAnn Weaver, 19th Century corn shelling, butter churning, apple cider tasting, walnut cracking and pumpkin painting.

     A 1963 single engine Beechcraft Debonair crash landed in a soybean field near Urbana, 1/2 mile west of SR 13 off of 500 N.  The plane crash was reported to Wabash County Sheriff's Department at 10:29 am.

    Wabash County Sheriff's Department Deputy Matt Cox confirmed one pilot and two passengers were on board. Pilot, Rex Ott, 62, Danville, Iowa, and front passenger Timothy Swift, 59, Washington, Iowa, sustained minor cuts and bruises. Rear passenger Tracy Swift, 52, Washington, Iowa, was airlifted to Parkview Hospital with a possible broken leg and lacerations. 

     Ott reported that the propellor went into overspeed while cruising at 5,500 ft. This means that the engine was running well over the recommended maximum RPM, which can cause engine damage or catastrophic failure. Oil sprayed out of engine onto windshield, causing pilot to lose visibility. It could not be slowed down, so the pilot decided to kill the engine altogether. The propellor continued to windmill until it fell off of the plane 2 miles east of the crash site.

     The pilot and passengers were flying from Iowa with an intended arrival in Van Wert, Ohio. They were in contact with the Wabash Municipal Airport planning an emergency landing, but quickly realized they could not make it. The airplane nearly hit trees in the wooded area adjacent to the field as they made the crash landing. 

.Reverend Tim and Mary (Cooper) Webb, Wabash, will celebrate their 25th anniversary Sept. 28 from 2-5 p.m. Everyone is welcome to come help the couple celebrate at the Southside Freewill Baptist Church, 360 Columbus St., Wabash. The couple’s daughters Sarah and Kara Webb and family members are sponsoring the celebration.

Reverend Tim and Mary Webb were married Sept. 24, 1988 at the Wabash Freewill Baptist Church by Reverend Donald Arms.

Reverend Tim is the current pastor at Southside Freewill Baptist Church and he has also been employed at Comcast for 27 years. Mary Webb is employed at Cornerstone Veterinary Services in Urbana. The couple has two daughters, Sarah and Kara Webb, both of Wabash

Recently, Senator Joe Donnelly announced a federal grant awarded by the Federal Aviation Administration to allow Wabash Municipal Airport to rehabilitate its runway. Under the FFA’s Airport Improvement Program (AIP), Wabash Municipal Airport was awarded approximately $1.5 million.

“Hoosier families and businesses rely on our state’s efficient infrastructure to get from one place to the next or to move goods and services. This grant provided by the Federal Aviation Administration will allow Wabash Municipal to improve its runway so that passengers and cargo plans can continue to be safe traveling in and out of Indiana,” Senator Donnelly said in a press release.

The grant money will be used to rehabilitate the eastwest runway, which is the main runway used at the facility.
