Wabash resident Carrie Pugh recently was the winner of a fully paid Paris trip through Avon.

She became an Avon representative in 2008 after receiving a monetary gift from her now late father.

“I wanted to take the 20 dollars and invest it, make it grow into more money,” Pugh told The Paper of Wabash County. “I had researched direct sales companies and picked Avon because they had other items besides makeup, like jewelry, fashion, fragrance and bath and body products. Something for everyone.”

Pugh also was interested in Avon because it was well known and could “sell itself.”

She has continued to sell Avon ever since because she loves the company.

Registering to vote in the Nov. 3 General Election ended on Monday, and early voting in Indiana began on Tuesday.

In addition, the Wabash County Clerk’s office has received more than 1,500 requests for absentee ballots this year, Clerk Lori Draper told The Paper of Wabash County.

As of Sept. 30, she said, her office has mailed out 1,688 requests for absentee ballots. That is up substantially from 2016, when the office mailed 384.

“So, we have already had a significant increase,” she said. “This is largely due to COVID-19. One causes of the increase is we cannot hold voting at our three nursing homes that we have used as polling locations in the past and the residents at these homes must vote by absentee.

During the October First Friday festivities in Downtown Wabash, a groundbreaking took place to mark the beginning of construction for the new location of Lighthouse Mission.

The Lighthouse Mission, along with F.I.S.H of Wabash County food pantry, Advantage Housing and 85 Hope Medical Clinic will be relocating to 123 W. Canal St., located at the corner of Canal and Cass Streets.

The thrift store has been looking for a new and larger location for a couple of years, according to Kristi Clark, board member of Lighthouse Mission.

“This new building will be able to provide food, clothing, housing and medical needs to those in our community,” said Clark.

The mission received a $500,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Community and Rural affairs.

The crisp Fall air and the gentle dew on the pumpkins contrasts with the fragrance of fresh-picked cantaloupe and sweet corn at Loon Creek Valley Farms in Banquo in the southwest corner of Huntington County. Easy to find just south of 124 on 105, the colorful vegetable stand lures passersby to stop and revel in the bounty.

Behind the beauty of the early fall harvest is a long family tradition. Current owners Katelyn and Ryan Shuttleworth are the third generation of Raders to offer produce in Huntington County.

Katelyn’s grandparents, Albert C. and Ruby Rader, operated Rader’s Market on Etna Avenue in Huntington from 1938 – 1970.

Wabash High School’s Alumni Field was dedicated in September following a major renovation.

Work at the field included creating a new eight-lane track, turf field for football and soccer, new lights, new scoreboard and  new visitor seating.

It was the first of several major projects undertaken by the Wabash City Schools district at both the Wabash High School and Wabash Middle School campus and at the L.H. Carpenter building.

A portion of the Honeywell Golf Course will be closed beginning in October while it undergoes renovations.

“Most of the changes were going to make are basically a bunker project,” Honeywell Golf Pro Mel Thomas said. “We’re going to rebuild some of the bunkers that we have available.

“We’re going to rebuild the majority of the bunkers. Hopefully it won’t take all that long. It may take possibly upwards of eight weeks, depending upon the weather. It could be even sooner than that.

“Once we get the bunkers done, hopefully we’ll have a golf course that’s really ready to go.”

To rebuild the bunkers, workers will clean them out, put in new drainage, a Billy bunker, which is a polymer.

A foreign dignitary was among those participating in the annual Wabash High School Homecoming parade on Friday, Sept. 25.

Consul General Kenichi Okada from Japan rode along the parade route with Mayor Scott Long, throwing candy to young and old alike along the parade route.

The consul general, based in Chicago, was in Wabash to present a $30,000 grant to Wabash City Schools officials for the district’s new Japanese Language Program. His office serves 10 Midwestern states, including Indiana. The grant is from the Japan Foundation and the Japanese government.

He was honored with a dinner at the Historic Eagles Theatre on Friday evening.

Okada’s visit Friday just happened to coincide with the school’s Homecoming festivities.

“Things worked out nicely,” said Sarah Delgadillo the Global Ambassador for the school district, City of Wabash and Grow Wabash County.

On Sept. 15, Wabash High School vice principal, Jeff Galley, posted photos of some old anatomy drawings on the schools Facebook page.

The post got a lot of attention due to the unique and historical nature of the photos shared.

The photos included in the post were student drawings of different body parts including the heart, digestive tract, and skulls. 

The photos were dated as drawn in 1907.

The Paper of Wabash County sat down with Galley to learn more about the drawings and plans on what to do with them.

“The library was actually doing some cleaning out of their vertical files and the librarian came to me with the drawings and said ‘I found these in the vertical files, what should I do with them?’” he said. “Being a history major and being a former history teacher, anything with the history of this building and facility, I am just fascinated with. The fact that here we are in a building that’s 100 years old in a high school established in 1869, there’s a lot of history to go along with that, so I said ‘Give ‘em here, let me look at them,’ and I thought, man, these things are really, really good, number one, and they are really cool. So, I just threw that Facebook post out there.”
