Miller’s Merry Manor resident Florence Bradley celebrated her 105th birthday on Tuesday, Nov. 10, with a surprise party hosted by the nursing home staff.

Bradley’s great-grandson Chad Harris told The Paper of Wabash County he always thought she’d live to be pretty old.

“She’s always been active since I’ve known her,” Harris said. “I think she was 60 when I was born, so I always thought she’d live to be fairly old. I’m not sure 105. That’s a really impressive age.”

Bradley said the secret to her longevity is “exercising. I’ve been working on the farm and keeping after my family. You get a lot of exercising in that way, working in the garden.”

ISP reports phone scam continues

By The Paper staff

The published public phone number of 812-867-2079 for the Indiana State Police in Evansville is reported to have been spoofed over the last 24 hours.

A person notified the Indiana State Police on Monday morning that he received a phone call from 812-867-2079 and the person calling identified himself as a police officer.  The caller further explained that he owed money to the Internal Revenue Service and that if he didn’t pay he would be arrested.  This is a common scam and Indiana State Police are NOT calling residents about their unpaid taxes.

Veterans’ memorial to be dedicated Nov. 14
By Joseph Slacian

LAFONTAINE – A trip to Markle to visit family sparked an idea with local resident George Barnes.

The idea will come to fruition on Saturday, Nov. 14, when a memorial dedicated to United States veterans will be unveiled near the LaFontaine Community Building. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m.

“Right downtown in Markle they have a veterans memorial,” Barnes told The Paper of Wabash County during a recent telephone interview. “We stopped and looked at it, and I asked my wife, ‘Why can’t we have one in LaFontaine?’”

Upon returning to LaFontaine, Barnes said he “started talking it up to different people” and the work began.

That was about 18 months ago.
