Dillon elected City Council president

Wabash City Council member Bryan Dillon will serve as council president for 2016.
He was unanimously elected to the position on Monday, Jan. 11, during the first City Council meeting of Mayor Scott Long’s administration.
Among the council president’s duties is serving as a liaison between the council and the mayor’s office. The president also fills in for the mayor at various functions when the mayor is unable to attend.
“I’m honored that the council had the confidence in me,” Dillon told The Paper of Wabash County following the meeting.
Wabash man lead suspect in Marion homicide

MARION – A Wabash man is the lead suspect in a Marion homicide investigation as of noon Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Waylon Sadler, 31, Wabash, is currently being held at Grant County Jail following the death of James L. Zook Jr., 55, Marion.
The Marion Police Department was alerted to the death after Shannon Collins, Zook’s daughter and Sadler’s girlfriend, called 911 on Tuesday.
Fire damages Wabash home

A Wabash residence suffered $55,000 in damage costs in an early morning fire on Sunday, Jan. 10.
The Wabash City Fire Department was dispatched to 39 W. Sinclair St. at 5:54 a.m. on Sunday after being alerted by homeowner Justin Kelly.
Fire department personnel were on scene for approximately three hours, according to an official report.
Wabash Court sentences Muncie paramedic

A former Muncie paramedic received a 2 ½ year sentence in the Indiana Department of Corrections during a Wabash Circuit Court hearing on Jan. 4.
The paramedic, Kyle Myers, pled guilty in November 2015 to the sexual battery of a Vernon Manor Children’s Home resident in November.
The Wabash Police Department arrested Meyers, 32, Muncie, in 2014 after receiving and investigating a report that a mute and physically challenged female had been sexually assaulted by Meyers, according to a 2014 story published in The Paper of Wabash County.
At the time, Meyers was a Heartland Ambulance Service paramedic and allegedly assaulted the female while traveling back from a doctor’s appointment in Carmel.
McCallen to seek re-election; Several candidates file in opening days

Wabash Circuit Court Judge Robert R. McCallen III made a courtesy filing Monday morning, Jan. 11, in the Wabash County Clerk’s office.
McCallen, in an email to The Paper of Wabash County on Sunday, announced his intention to seek re-election on the Republican ticket. In announcing his bid for re-election, he noted his desire to build upon his accomplishments.
“Wabash County continues to be asked to do more with less,” he said in the email. “I am proud of the hard work of the Circuit and Superior Courts, Probation, Community Corrections and the Prosecutor’s office. We are proactive in addressing the needs of our community.”
Wabash baby is first born at Parkview Huntington in 2016
Lucas Allen Caley was born Jan. 1 at 7:10 a.m. and was the first newborn of the New Year at Parkview Huntington Hospital. Caley is the second child of Haley and Josh Caley of North Manchester.

Lucas Allen Caley was born at 7:10 a.m. on Jan. 1, becoming the first baby of the New Year at Parkview Huntington Hospital.
Hayley and Josh Caley of North Manchester delivered their son at Parkview Huntington Hospital after Mrs. Caley began to have “very strong” contractions at 12:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, she told The Paper of Wabash County in an email.
“We were schedule to be induced at Parkview Regional Medical Center in Fort Wayne (at) 6 a.m.,” she wrote. “So we knew he would be born on the first but didn’t know he would be the first one for Huntington’s hospital.”
Board deals with two downtown buildings

The owner of two downtown buildings is taking steps to refurbish the sites.
But before Julie Locke could make any more progress on the two buildings, she first needed some input from the Wabash Board of Public Works and Safety.
Locke, a Paso Robles, Calif., resident, and her attorney, Justin Wall, asked the board to have Building Commissioner John Stephens inspect her property at 231-233 S. Wabash St. It also asked the board for a 120-day extension to complete repairs to 5 W. Canal St. which former owner Jack Francis was ordered to complete before selling the two building to Locke.
Firefighter to receive back pay, damages

A Wabash firefighter will receive more than $18,000 in back pay, damages and attorney fees following a punishment last year that has since been voided.
Firefighter Jacob Hierholzer agreed to work for six weeks without pay as punishment for failing to call in sick. The punishment was suggested by then-Fire Chief Bob Mullett and approved by the Wabash Board of Public Works and Safety on May 20, 2015.
However at the first Board of Works meeting under new Mayor Scott Long’s administration, City Attorney Randi Zimmerman-Irgang recommended the city reach a settlement with Hierholzer.
