Kenny and Kathie Clark, and their sons Brian and Chris, have always taken pride in being part of a close-knit community like North Manchester, but even they admit that the recent outpouring of love and support from their fellow community members took them by surprise.

On Jan. 23, the local Moose Family Center hosted a benefit for Brian, 37, who is in the debilitating stages of Multiple Sclerosis. The event featured a freewill donation hog roast dinner and a live auction conducted by “Mr. Action Auctioneer” JP Pitts, as well as music and dancing.

Donations for the auction were accepted at the Moose in the weeks leading up to the benefit, which was planned as a fundraiser to help the family purchase a transport vehicle and furnish Brian’s apartment with handicap-accessible equipment.

The Wabash Kiwanis Club hosted its annual spelling bee competition at the Wabash Middle School auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 2.

While the bee provides another educational opportunity for area students, it also provided kids students with a different opportunity to shine, according to Jack Thomas II, Kiwanis member and event coordinator.

“I think it’s another alternative for kids,” Thomas told The Paper of Wabash County. “Some kids might not be the greatest the athlete or might not be a band member or whatever but maybe they’re great at spelling and this is their chance to shine in that event.”

Wabash County Promise launches scholarship program
By Joseph Slacian

The Community Foundation of Wabash County received a $430,000 grant from the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, which will be used to provide scholarships for Wabash County Promise Initiative (WCPI) students in fourth through eighth grade.

The scholarships were announced on Monday, Feb. 8, during a joint luncheon of WCPI and the Wabash Rotary Club. The grant was made to the Community Foundation of Wabash County.

“The WCPI – known formally as the Promise Early Distribution Scholarship Program – was initiated in 2013, when only seven percent of the county’s youth under 18 had a college saving account,” Community Foundation Executive Director Patty Grant noted. “Today, more than 70 percent of families with children in grades K through five in Wabash County are saving for college."

NORTH MANCHESTER -- During the evening on Friday, Jan. 29, Chris and Mika Clark’s vehicles were broken into while parked outside their home, located just west of here on State Road 114. It was the third time in as many months that someone had taken items from their vehicles, but this time was different, as the Clarks had recently installed a trail camera in order to monitor their vehicles.

According to Clark, the first time they realized that someone had been in their vehicles and taken things was around Thanksgiving, and neither of the vehicles had been locked at the time.
