Ernest "Chuck" Hubbard

The Wabash Police Department arrested a Wabash man on Tuesday, March 15, following an investigation of multiple thefts that have been reported since November.

 

Ernest “Chuck” Hubbard, 39, was arrested on eight counts of theft. Specifically, he was charged with four counts misdemeanor theft of less than $750 and four counts felony theft of greater than $750 but less than $50,000.

 

According to the Wabash County Jail notes, Hubbard was out on electronic home detention.

LAKETON – Bob McDonald, secretary of the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs, has a specific vision for his agency, those attending a veterans’ town hall meeting Friday, March 18, at the Laketon American Legion were told.

 

The VA is represented by three branches: the National Cemetery Administration, the Veterans Benefits Administration, and the Veterans Health Administration.

 

“It really should be one VA,” Michael Stephens, director of the Department of Veterans Affairs’ Indianapolis Regional Office, told the nearly 75 people in attendance at the two-hour event. “We just spent time in Virginia earlier this month with the secretary as we learn more and more about what his vision is for VA.

 

“That vision is a ‘My VA’ type of experience. That’s where veterans are able to go to VA and get answers for their questions, regardless of which branch. To you, all VA is the VA.

Pastor Kent Young

Pastor Kent Young told The Paper of Wabash County that he is glad to be celebrating his third year with Trinity Lutheran Church.

 

Since 2013, Young has shared the message of “the meaningfulness of a relationship with Christ” with his followers at the local church.

 

“It’s a message that’s no different than anywhere else,” he said. “The message of meaningfulness through a relationship with Christ is the same no matter where you are.

 

“On the other hand, it has to be tailored to other people in any given area, so consequently you have to speak in a language that people understand where you are and are communicating.”

 

The message is really no different than other churches, but Young said he simply tries to tailor his messages to “what I really believe the Lord leads me … to share.”

Clyde Lovellette

Clyde Lovellette, a member of the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame, is remembered for his skills on the court. But those who knew him around Wabash County are remembering him for his love of God and his willingness to help troubled children.

 

Lovellette passed away Wednesday night, March 9, at his home in North Manchester. He was 86.

 

Lovellette was one of the first dominant big men in the game of basketball. Standing 6-foot-9-inches, he starred on the Terre Haute Garfield High School basketball team before attending the University of Kansas.

A two-time All-American at UK, Lovellette scored 33 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead Kansas to an 80-63 win over St. John’s in the 1952 NCAA championship game. Later that year, he helped to lead the U.S. basketball team to a gold medal in the Olympic games in Helsinki, Finland.

The Wabash Kiwanis Club stacked pancakes up high on Saturday, March 12, for its annual Pancake Day fundraising event.

 

The event collects funds for the purpose of supporting the club’s local service projects and other causes including the Riley Hospital for Children and the Wabash County Special Olympics.

 

“This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for Wabash Kiwanis Club,” Jay Vanderburg, club president elect and event organizer, told The Paper of Wabash County, “and one of the biggest things that we support is Riley’s Children’s Hospital, but then there’s lots of other things we donate to (such as) FAME Festival in town, we support both Key Clubs in Wabash and in Northfield and lots of other music and arts programs in town.”

Every year, 1.5 million high school students report physical abuse from their boyfriend or girlfriend, according to Matthew Graham, director of the Bowen Center.

 

“One in 10 high school students has been hit purposefully, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend,” he continued. “One in 10. That’s 2 percent (of all U.S. students). That’s a lot.

 

“It gets to the point where do we begin calling it normal? I bet you some people think it’s normal. I wonder if that’s why it continues to occur.”

 

On Friday, March 11, Graham spoke to local educators, community leaders and representatives of local youth-based organizations about the dangers and reality of teen dating violence and ways “we” as a community can prevent the violence and help victims found in those situations.
