Wabash man charged with attempted child solicitation

A Wabash man was booked into the Wabash County Jail on Tuesday, May 17, following a Wabash Police Department investigation.
 
William L. Swan, 18, Wabash, was charged with felony attempted child solicitation after WPD received a report in April.

Local March of Dimes raises $12,000 for cause

Seventy-five walkers gathered at Paradise Spring Historical Park on Saturday, May 7, to walk for babies with the March of Dimes.
 
From the park to Vernon Manor, attendees walked 3.6 miles and raised more than $12,000 for the cause. The Emergency Management Agency staff, the Sheriff’s Department and Wabash Police Department were present to provide safety as the walkers traveled the route.
 
The Wabash County Committee for the March of Dimes provided snacks, lunch, face painting opportunities and provided rides for walkers who couldn’t walk the entire route.

Warsaw man facing drug possession, dealing charges

A Warsaw male was arrested Sunday, May 15, for possession of marijuana and dealing marijuana after being pulled over because of a report of fighting within his moving vehicle. 
 
A concern citizen called the Wabash County Sheriff’s Department and reported a fight-in-progress in a white, Chevy Lumina vehicle driving south on State Road 15.
 
The officers located the vehicle and questioned the man and woman inside.

Crash claims NM man

A rural North Manchester man was killed in a two-vehicle crash Friday morning on Wabash County Road 100 E and CR 1400 N.
 
David Christian, 62, rural North Manchester was pronounced dead at the scene following the 8:42 a.m. accident.

Special Olympians compete

Wabash County Special Olympian Richard Hundt tries his hand at the long jump on Saturday morning during the Area 5 Special Olympic Games at Wabash High School’s Alumni Field. EMA, Emergency Planning Committee test public safety agencies

It started with a phone call.
 
“This is a drill and we have a chlorine leak, looks like a fatality and several people with breathing problems,” Terry Hobbs, Real Alloy employee, called into 9-1-1 Saturday morning, May 14.
 
Then the test began.
 
More than 15 public safety agencies and local organizations participated in a disaster drill on Saturday morning at the Real Alloy complex.

Parkview Wabash plans groundbreaking

Groundbreaking for the new Parkview Wabash Hospital will take place at noon, June 30, hospital officials confirmed with The Paper of Wabash County.
 
Officials from Parkview Health and the local hospital are expected to participate in the event, which will take place at 1800 N. Wabash St., the site of the new facility.

Longtime NM elementary educator retires

NORTH MANCHESTER – Manchester Elementary School teacher Kathy Hawkins is retiring after 28 years of educating Laketon and North Manchester youth.
 
Since 1988, Hawkins has taught approximately 700 youngsters at two different schools, across four different grades and with seven different principals. She also received two Teacher Creativity grants from the Community Foundation of Wabash County in 2006 and 2014.
 
“I was three years president of Manchester’s Teachers Association and I’m very proud of that,” Hawkins said with a laugh, reciting her “numbers.”
 
She’s also been a “beacon” for promoting the arts in the North Manchester community, according to daughter Sarah Hawkins Moan.
