Third arrested in connection to LaFontaine burglary

A Matthews man was arrested Tuesday, June 21, in connection to a Jan. 24 burglary of a LaFontaine home.
Morgan P. King, 36, was charged with felony burglary, felony conspiracy to commit burglary and misdemeanor theft of less than $750 following a five-month Wabash County Sheriff’s Department investigation.
Wabash man charged following June 17 incident

A Wabash man is now facing a misdemeanor charge for a Friday, June 17, incident on State Road 15 near Honeywell Golf Course.
James B. Pinkerton, 30, was charged with misdemeanor criminal mischief after he allegedly jumped into a vehicle’s windshield.
At approximately 1:04 p.m., Wabash County Sheriff’s Department officers responded to a report of a pedestrian being struck on SR 15, according to the probable cause affidavit.
Commissioners learn of cemetery’s needs

A LaFontaine resident gave the Wabash County Commissioners a lesson on the importance of cemetery maintenance during its June 27 meeting.
Regina Hiple told commissioners that concerned citizens and descendants of pioneers from Ashland and LaFontaine formed a group called Friends of the Old LaFontaine Cemetery in September 2014. The group’s purpose is to repair and restore the Ashland Graveyard and Old LaFontaine Cemetery.
“When this project began, we received a quote of $200,000 for the complete restoration of our cemetery,” Hiple said.
Keaffaber named MSD superintendent

The MSD of Wabash County School Board named Mike Keaffaber as the corporation’s next superintendent at a special meeting Thursday, June 16.
The board began searching for its next superintendent on June 8 following former Dr. Sandra Weaver’s retirement announcement.
Weaver’s resignation will come into full effect June 30.
Land acquired for dog park

A dog park in the City of Wabash is one step closer to reality.
Stan and Patsy Myers have agreed to let the park be built on about an acre of land south of their business, EcoWater Systems, 615 S. Carroll St.
The park will be under the auspices of The Dog Man of Wabash County, according to Gary Henderson, better known as The Dog Man.
Official calls Lagro Good Ole Days a success

LAGRO – Several hundred people line the streets of Lagro on Saturday afternoon, June 18, for the annual Lagro Good Ole Days Festival.
The parade featured fire trucks, old cars and floats from various community organizations. Of course, most of the entries tossed candy to the youngsters who were standing along the parade route, bags to hold the free goodies in hand.
Lagro resident Clyde Rife was the parade’s grand marshal.
Pegg joins Wabash Fire Department

Jacob Pegg is the newest probationary firefighter with the Wabash Fire Department.
Mayor Scott Long gave Pegg the oath of office when the Wabash City Council met on June 13.
“I’ve wanted to be a firefighter ever since I was little,” Pegg said following the meeting. “I can’t be more proud of what I’m doing now.”
Wabash County Transit seeks 2017 grant

Living Well in Wabash County is seeking a grant for 2017 to assist with the operating costs of Wabash County Transit (WCT).
Beverly Ferry, Chief Executive Officer of Living Well in Wabash County, presented information about the grant to the Wabash County Commissioners on June 13.
WCT has a projected budget of nearly $600,000 for 2017. Of that, nearly $199,000 comes from local sources. These sources include discounts granted to WCT by local businesses, which average between $20,000 and $60,000 per year.
