After much speculation, the Manchester Community Schools Board of Trustees confirmed in a statement sent out Wednesday, June 30, confirming that Superintendent Dr. Teresa Gremaux would no longer be with Manchester Community Schools.

The statement read:

“Manchester Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Teresa Gremaux has communicated to the School Board that she has been offered, and intends to accept, employment with another school corporation. In anticipation of a formal resignation, MCA has posted the superintendent position in the hopes of finding the best candidates and to fill the role as soon as possible. The Board is committed to serving the community and providing the very best educators for its students. The Board appreciates the time that Dr. Gremaux has spent at MCS and wishes her nothing but the best.”

County library summer reading programs are in full swing this summer after a summer of new and unique programs to work around guidelines set in place for COVID-19.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and Denny Spinner, Executive Director of the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA), recently appointed Wabash Marketplace Executive Director Andrea Zwiebel to serve on the newly formed Rural Affairs Working Group.

The Wabash City Council, on June 28, endorsed a letter to Acting Secretary of the Air Force John Roth asking him to consider Grissom Air Reserve Base as the home for the new KC-46A Main Operating Base.

In May, the Department of the Air Force named Grissom and five other bases as potential locations for the KC-46A Pegasus aircraft.

Mayor Scott Long said he attended a recent meeting at Grissom on the subject.

“They’ve done a lot of work over the years on their fuel system at Grissom on how they deliver fuel to the aircraft in preparation to try to land a wing of these new tankers,” he said.

During the meeting, he was asked to prepare a letter of support from the City of Wabash, the City Council and himself.

Susan Garrett was installed as national president of Kappa Delta Phi Sorority on June 19 at the Embassy Suites Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

She was initiated into the Wabash chapter, Gamma Omega, in April of 1972 and has served as a dedicated member, including seven years as a National Officer.

“After attending my first National Convention in 1979 in Nashville, Tenn., as official pianist, I knew I wanted to aspire to be National President someday,” Garrett told The Paper of Wabash County. “As the years rolled by, I was active in several other National offices and also stayed active in my local chapter. I have worked up through the ranks and waited my turn to become President.”

Finally, her aspirations have become a reality.

There are many ways to celebrate the Fourth of July this year in Wabash County.

On Friday, July 2, there will be a fireworks celebration, labeled Freedom Fest, and put on by the Olive Branch Church, at Long Lake Resort. This celebration will start at 6:30 p.m., with free food starting at 6:45, kids’ games starting at 7:15, worship and baptisms starting at 8:15 and fireworks beginning at dusk. All are welcome.

On Saturday, July 3, two fireworks celebrations will take place.

Manchester University, Manchester Community Schools and the town of North Manchester present the 2021 Independence Day Celebration and Fireworks Display at Manchester High School on Saturday, July 3.

The rain date is July 4.

“I don’t feel like I’m that old,” said Sarah Roe, Roann resident who turned 101 years old on May 7. “I thought 80 would be a good age to live to. Every year, I think that will be it, but then another year comes.”

Roe lives by herself at her home in Roann, with help from a home healthcare worker and her daughter who lives just down the road and is a call away, as well as her other daughter.

Sarah was born and raised in Swayzee. As a girl, Sarah enjoyed climbing trees.

“We had wild cherry trees and we figured out that we could peel the bark off and roll it up into a ball, it was that thin,” she said. “So, we’d sit up there and roll up a lot of balls.”

She remembers the struggles of growing up in the Great Depression. Growing up on a farm, she said they weren’t hit as hard as other families, but that it was still hard to get by.

“I remembered we couldn’t have shoes at all in the summer time,” she said. “I remember, it was really bad. Today, you don’t know what a depression is like, people say we are having a depression and I say ‘Shoot, you’re not having anything.’”
