White’s Gibson named Sagamore of the Wabash

Dee Gibson, chief executive officer of White’s Residential and Family Services, is the newest Sagamore of the Wabash.
 
Gibson received the honor on Monday, Jan. 9. He was honored on Thursday, Jan. 19, during a reception at White’s.
 
He received a call the week before, asking if he would be in the office on Jan. 9. A representative from Gov. Mike Pence’s office had something to show him, he was told.

MSD reorganizes school board

The MSD of Wabash County Board of Education swore in two new members and reorganized its board Tuesday night, Jan. 10, at its first meeting of the year.
 
Following the swearing in of re-elected board member Kevin Bowman and new members Gary Fadil and Todd Topliff, the board experienced a reorganization.
 
In a unanimous decision, Bowman was elected as board president while member Matt Driscoll was elected to the vice president role. Board member Todd Dazey was elected as the board's secretary.

‘Elvis Lives’ brings musical icon back to life on Honeywell Center stage

The multi-media musical “Elvis Lives” brings the king of rock’n’roll back to life and onto the Honeywell Center Ford Theater stage in Wabash Thursday, Jan. 26.
 
In tribute to Elvis Presley, the three-man performance will take the audience on a musical journey through the icon’s life, which is absolutely something to see, according to Bill Cherry, one of the group’s leads.
 
“We’re really looking forward to coming to Wabash and seeing everyone out there,” Cherry told The Paper of Wabash County.

County receives training grant

Wabash County residents interested in earning certified machinist, welders or industrial maintenance certificates should contact the Economic Development Group (EDG) of Wabash County now, according to Lori Shipman, of Lori Shipman Consulting LLC.
 
Within the next year, Wabash County’s EDG in partnership with Kosciusko and Huntington counties’ economic development groups will receive a Community Development Block Grant through the Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA) to distribute to its area locals, Shipman, the grant’s administrator, told The Paper of Wabash County.
 
On Tuesday, Jan. 17, Shipman met with Wabash County Commissioners and Economic Development Group of Wabash County (EDG) to provide an update on the grant’s progress.

Local graduation rates top 90 percent

The Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) released corporation grades and graduations rates Wednesday, Jan. 11, and several Wabash County schools received passing marks.
 
In corporation grades, MSD of Wabash County and Manchester Community Schools (MCS) received B rankings while Wabash City Schools (WCS) received a C. However, no matter the grade, the schools’ superintendents agreed they aren’t an accurate representation of the students or schools’ capabilities.
 
A corporation’s letter grade is dependent upon how well students test

Foul play ruled out in death of local woman

Wabash Police have ruled out foul play in the death of a 35-year-old Wabash woman.
 
However, the cause of death of Genna M. Garcia-Hiatt, is still unknown.
 
Garcia-Hiatt’s body was found shortly after 8 a.m. Monday, Jan. 9, in the area of Wabash and East Main streets near downtown Wabash.

Council OKs Eagles measure, tables second measure

The Wabash City Council helped pave the way Monday night, Jan. 9, for the Eagles Theatre renovation project to qualify for state and federal funding.
 
The Council approved minor word changes to the city’s Fair Housing Ordinance. The ordinance’s language now follows the Federal Housing and Community Development Act of 1974 and Indiana Code.
 
The lone change was the definition of family. 
 
Under the old city ordinance, approved in 2012, the definition of family included “families regardless of the actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or marital status of its members,” Mayor Scott Long told the Council.

Manchester school board swears in new member

NORTH MANCHESTER -- The Manchester Community Schools Board of School Trustees swore in one new member and elected officers at its first meeting of 2017.
 
Corporation Attorney Al Schlitt swore in Ruth Ayres, who beat incumbent Buddy Brunn in the November election for his seat on the board. Brady Burgess and Steve Flack, incumbents who won their elections in November, were also sworn in.
