MSD budget sees $2.4 million cut

The MSD of Wabash County Board of Education cut more than $2.4 million from its budget Tuesday night, Feb. 14.
 
As ordered by the Indiana Department of Local Government Finance, the board trimmed $2,447,990 from its General Fund, Capital Projects Fund, Transportation Fund, Bus Replacement and Rainy Day Fund.

City OKs 13-15 Corridor contract

The Wabash Board of Public Works and Safety unanimously approved a contract with DLZ Indiana Thursday, Feb. 16.
 
The contract, not to exceed $114,350, is for the 13-15 Corridor Project that is part of the Stellar projects.

Sheriff to purchase SUVs for use by K9 officers

The Wabash County Sheriff’s department is looking to purchase two new Ford Explorers for its new K9 units.
 
Sheriff Bob Land presented the county commissioners with a request to purchase the vehicles from City Ford in Columbia City at their Monday, Feb. 20 meeting.

11 charged in Huntington County drug dealing arrest effort; Wabash law enforcement assist

Eleven individuals are facing drug charges following a multi-agency effort to combat drug dealing in Huntington County on Wednesday, Feb. 15.
 
The Huntington County Sheriff’s Department and the Indiana State Police Drug Enforcement Section assisted the Huntington City Police Department in investigating approximately 20 individuals on drug dealing charges.
 
The Wabash City Police Department and Wabash County Sheriff’s Department served arrest warrants for the operation with the HCPD, HCSD, Andrews Town Marshal’s Office, Markle Town Marshal’s Office, Allen County Drug Task Force and ISP.

MSD Board continues talks on Southwood sewer project

The MSD of Wabash County Board of Education continued its talks on the Southwood sewer project at its meeting Tuesday night, Feb. 14.
 
The project, which would update the Southwood elementary and high school existing sanitary system, would cost the board approximately $600,000, according to Keith Bryant, of United Consulting, which designed the project’s layout.
 
Bryant advised the MSD board on the project at its Jan. 24 meeting.

Wabash woman's death cause ruled natural

The Wabash woman whose body was discovered near Wabash and Main streets in January died of natural causes, according to Cpt. Matt Benson, Wabash Police Department public information officer.
 
At approximately 8:10 a.m. on Jan. 9, Genna Garcia-Hiatt, 35, of Wabash, was discovered lying on the sidewalk near downtown Wabash and unresponsive, according Benson.

NM becomes focal point in Fulton Co. gun shop burglary

NORTH MANCHESTER – North Manchester has become the focal point of a federal investigation of a Fulton County gun shop burglary, in which more than 50 handguns were stolen.
 
After following several leads, at least six of the 57 stolen firearms have been confirmed recovered within North Manchester’s town limits and two North Manchester men have been charged in connection to the crime.
 
Robert M. Hoy, 21, North Manchester, was charged with theft of firearms from a licensed firearms dealer, a federal offense.
 
Charles M. Hammer, 30, North Manchester, was detained in Michigan on Dec. 9. Officials did not confirm arrest charges by The Paper’s deadline.

Riverfront development work to begin within next few weeks

Organizers of a new Wabash River development hope to begin work in a few weeks.

Jordan Tandy, a member of the committee seeking to put a new plaza along the Wabash River Trail, told the Wabash Park Board that the group hopes to be finished by Memorial Day weekend and that a formal dedication would take place during First Friday activities in June.
