85 Hope provides record number of free mammograms

85 HOPE Free Medical Clinic hosted its third annual Mammo Month in October in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. During that month, 85 HOPE offered every Wabash County woman ages 40-64 the opportunity to receive an order for a free 3-D mammogram at Parkview Wabash Hospital.

This year, 85 HOPE gave out a record number of 120 mammogram orders.

Beacon officials name new President/CEO

The Board of Directors of Beacon Credit Union (BCU) is pleased to announce that they have named Dustin Cuttriss as the next President/CEO.  Cuttriss, BCU’s Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, will assume the role after current President/CEO Kevin Willour retires at the end of 2022.

Group honors veterans with gifts of quilts

A local group of ladies have, for about a decade, displayed their sewing skills for the purpose of honoring military veterans — a tradition they fear may be coming to an end.

“I think this is the last we’re going to do it,” said Mary Clark, a representative of the Quilts of Honor Quilters who along with the Woman’s Clubhouse hosted an annual Veterans’ Luncheon Nov. 12 at Bachelor Creek Church of Christ.

Honeywell hosts recelebration of Eagles completion

There was a celebration -- albeit a year later than hoped -- on Saturday night, Nov. 13, to mark the completion of the Historic Eagles Theatre revitalization project.

Donors and other Honeywell Foundation supporters gathered at the theatre during the invitation only event to hear the music of The Sweetwater All-Stars and others during the event. A post-concert party took place in the revamped Parkview Ballroom on the top floor of the theatre.

Student gamers take on other schools through 'E Sports'

While jumping chest bumps and high fives, commonly seen on the athletic field, may not be prevalent, there is some semblance of trash talk and the thrill of victory during a new type of head-to-head competition in local high schools.

Instead of jerseys, cleats and playing fields, competitors in these matches need a game controller and a pair of nimble thumbs.

Known as E-sports, high school-aged video game enthusiasts have been slowly integrated into school-sponsored programs that pit participating high schools against each other, giving these competitors a way to bring online bragging rights to their alma mater.

Furry Fix makes, distributes 70-plus cat shelters

More than 70 cat shelters were made and distributed on Sunday by Furry Fix, a non-profit organization that helps provide low-cost spay and neutering services in Wabash County.

Volunteers gathered at the Wabash Knights of Columbus hall on Sunday afternoon, and created an assembly line of sorts to produce the shelters.

The shelters are made from new and used coolers. One handle is removed from the cooler and an entry and exit hole is drilled into the end of the item.

Wabash certified as Broadband Ready Community

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch and the Indiana Broadband Office announced Saturday that the City of Wabash is now designated as an official Broadband Ready Community. The Broadband Ready Communities Program was created as a tool to encourage broadband development throughout Indiana.
