Mark Hurt, a Kokomo-based lawyer and former Wabash High School teacher, is running as a Republican candidate for U.S. Senate.

Hurt recently stopped by Wabash for a meeting with the Indiana Policy Foundation.

However, prior to the meeting, the candidate met with The Paper of Wabash County to discuss why he’s running, his stances and how he would represent Indiana on the U.S. Senate if elected.

A Summitville native, Hurt attended Madison Grant High School and graduated from Taylor University with a bachelor’s in teaching and coaching in 1985.

The Umbrella Tree, a fair trade pop-up shop, is now open in downtown Wabash and will remain there until Saturday Dec. 23.

Located at 160 S. Wabash St., the temporary store officially opened Nov. 17. It offers a variety of fair trade, hand-crafted goods including bags, toys, jewelry, chocolate, woolens and shoes, according to Sally Forrester Rich, owner.

“The things that we have were fairly traded, which means that they were bought (at a fair price),” Rich said. “It starts with trying to make a living for people in developing countries. So you start with paying them a fair wage and go from there. There are fewer middlemen so it does turn out to be more expensive (for the consumer), but you’re paying a fair wage.

“Also you’re not buying things that come from slave labor or things like that.”

The Wabash Business Complex has been designated as a Prime Site, the highest award for shovel readiness in the state of Indiana, by the Office of Community and Rural Affairs (OCRA), officials from the City of Wabash and Grow Wabash County announced today.
